Position Summary
The National History Day (NHD) in Milwaukee Learning Facilitator is responsible for supporting the implementation and growth of the National History Day program in the Milwaukee region. This work is done in support of a grant-funded initiative led by the Wisconsin Historical Society to expand access to high quality civic learning and historical literacy education in SE Wisconsin. National History Day is a school year academic program for students in grades 6-12, which focuses on developing research, critical thinking, and analytical skills through history project-based learning.
The NHD in Milwaukee Learning Facilitator provides dedicated support to Milwaukee schools and educators. They are responsible for creating and implementing a support system for schools newly participating in and those returning to National History Day, including digital resources, in-person presentations, and one-on-one coaching for educators. They also coordinate visits by students and teachers to Milwaukee-area museums and research centers to augment student learning and create tangible connections between research projects and local history.
Responsibilities:
  • Facilitate learning experiences for Milwaukee students and teachers participating in National History Day:
  • Facilitate virtual and in-person workshops about research, civic learning, and historical literacy for Milwaukee classrooms participating in National History Day.
  • Revise and update curricular resources to support student research.
  • Revise and update facilitation resources for teachers.
  • Coordinate and facilitate student research visits to Wisconsin Historical Society (WHS) Library and Archives during the fall semester.
  • Provide NHD contest logistical support:
  • Provide administrative and event coordination support for the Milwaukee area NHD regional contests.
  • Attend and help facilitate the Milwaukee area NHD regional contests.
  • Engage Milwaukee area schools and teachers in NHD
  • Identify key contacts within Milwaukee area schools that can help grow participation in the NHD program.
  • Connect with Milwaukee area teachers and administrators to encourage participation in NHD.

Salary Information
Pay is $17.75 per hour with a weekend differential of 80 cents per hour. This classification is in schedule and class 13-04.
Please note this is a Limited Term Employment position so it does not include paid time off or benefits upon hire.
Job Details
A criminal background check will be conducted by WHS prior to an offer of employment to determine if the circumstances of any conviction may be related to the job.
This is a Limited Term Employment (LTE) position and limited to 1,039 hours. This position will be part time and average 20 hours per week.
Wisconsin residency is required for Limited Term Employment positions.
Limited Term Employment (LTE) positions are not civil service classified positions, do not give any rights to permanent civil service classified positions and do not lead to permanent status.
WHS does not sponsor work visas. Any appointment made will be contingent on the applicant being able to prove valid status to work in the United States.
Certain positions within WHS may allow remote/work from home flexibility for a portion of their work schedule, depending on the needs of the position and the work unit. This topic and any remote work flexibility that may be available will be discussed in more detail in the interview process.
Qualifications
  • Enthusiasm for teaching and engaging students in the study of history literacy, research, and civic engagement in an informal learning environment.
  • Excellent communication and organization skills and ability to effectively engage with large groups.
  • Must be available to support the Milwaukee NHD regional contests, which take place during the winter or spring.
  • Knowledge of Milwaukee area schools preferred.
  • Experience working with PK-12 groups and/or developing learning experiences for these audiences preferred.
  • Ability to use a computer and possess working knowledge of word processing and database software.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and arrive on time.
  • Ability to work weekend and evening hours for a limited number of programs and events.
  • Ability to drive required.
Schedule:
In the winter and spring, tasks are primarily aligned engaging Milwaukee area teachers and supporting the Milwaukee NHD regional contest. Frequent travel between Milwaukee and Madison is expected. Hours of work generally occur Monday - Friday, between 9am and 3pm.
In the summer, tasks are primarily aligned to continuing to support teachers and preparing curricular materials for the fall semester. Occasional travel between Milwaukee and Madison is expected. Hours of work occur Monday - Friday, between 9am and 3pm.
In the fall, tasks are primarily aligned to supporting NHD student research and learning. This may take place in classrooms, virtually, at Milwaukee area museums, and at the WHS Library and Archives. Frequent travel between Milwaukee and Madison is expected. Hours of work occur Monday - Friday, between 9am and 3pm.
