Job Description Summary
The intern will support the City of Columbia's finance operations while learning about a career in public service. Finance/Data Science interns will gain practical experience in the constantly evolving field of public finance. Regular duties and responsibilities for the intern, include reading & understanding of the public policy-related reports, analyzing & preparing reports, and assisting with City ERP software. The intern will work collaboratively with other Economic Division staff and the Finance Director. The intern might also complete administrative work while observing different aspects of accounting, budgeting, procurement, treasury, economic, and business services.
Essential Job Functions
• Analyze the fiscal impact of proposed legislation and prepare fiscal notes.
• Provide support for general fund-related revenue analysis.
• Assist with time series analysis and other special projects.
• Prepare and present monthly/quarterly economic reports to the City of Columbia's Finance Audit and Advisory Committee.
• Provide support for Sales & Use Tax database development.
• Develop, maintain, and update PowerBI dashboards.
• Present data-driven recommendations to the finance team.
Ancillary Job Functions
• Assist Economic Division's regular activities.
• Help showcase the City of Columbia's financial performance.
• Run financial reports and collect data.
• Assist in developing GIS maps.
• Write and run SQL queries and reports.
• Developing application for internal users.
Knowledge & Skills
• Basic understanding of state and local (city and county) government.
• Knowledge of public finance, economics, statistics, mathematics, business, accounting, and computer science.
• Strong communication skills, including writing, oral, and data-driven storytelling.
• Understanding the principles of data and financial analysis reporting for public finance and budgeting.
• Excellent computer skills, including the use of Advanced Excel, PowerBI, and other programming software including R & Python.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team, assisting peers with their responsibilities.
• Strong technical writing skills to prepare fiscal notes, financial analysis reports, and documents.
• Ability to develop and maintain positive relationships with staff, other city employees, vendors, citizens, and other contacts.
• Excellent attention to detail and commitment to accurate results.
Minimum Qualifications
Must be at least a Jr. in college
Have valid Driver's License
• Understanding of the principles of financial analysis and reporting, public finance, capital improvement, governmental accounting and budgetary control.
• Excellent computer skills including the use of Microsoft Office, Enterprise Resource Planning systems, and reporting tools.
• Ability to work independently and apply professional judgment and as part of a team with the ability to assist peers with their responsibilities.
• Above average technical writing skills to prepare financial analysis reports and documents.
• Ability to develop and maintain positive relationships with staff, other city employees, vendors, citizens and other contacts.
• Demonstrated attention to detail and commitment to accurate results
