Position Title: Cost Accountant

Reports To: Controller

Supervises: None

Classification: Salary, exempt, non-union

Position Summary

The Cost Accountant is responsible for analyzing, monitoring, and reporting on product and service costs to support accurate financial reporting, budgeting, and strategic decision-making. This role partners closely with operations to improve cost visibility, control spending, and enhance profitability.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

The statements below are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by the employee of this position. They are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all responsibilities and activities required of this position.

  • Calculate, analyze, and maintain standard, actual, and variance costs for materials, labor, and overhead
  • Prepare and analyze cost of goods sold (COGS) and gross margin reports
  • Monitor inventory valuation, including standard cost updates and excess/obsolete inventory reserves
  • Perform cost variance analysis and investigate root causes with operations and supply chain teams
  • Support month-end close activities, including journal entries and reconciliations related to inventory and manufacturing costs
  • Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and cost modeling initiatives
  • Participate in physical inventory counts and cycle counts
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP and internal control requirements
  • Support audits by providing cost-related documentation and analysis
  • Identify opportunities for cost reduction and process improvement
  • Additional duties as assigned

This position mainly operates in an office environment during work hours, but may be expanded to assist and support employees in other departments within the Company; Occasional exposure to production equipment and machinery. The employee will manage multiple priorities daily and may be interrupted frequently to meet the needs and requests of employees. The environment may be busy and noisy. All required personal protective equipment is provided.
