ABOUT THE ROLE

The Project Manager - Gas Fleet Critical Spares is accountable for developing, optimizing, and executing strategy for managing critical spare parts across gas fleet assets. This role ensures operational reliability, minimizes downtime, and reduces lifecycle costs by balancing engineering-assessed risk, inventory levels, and supply chain efficiency.

The position requires strong collaboration across engineering, operations, maintenance, inventory management and supply chain teams to build a data-driven, risk-based approach to spare parts management.

This is a part-time, safety sensitive position based out of our Head Office in Downtown Calgary, Alberta, working approximately three days per week. The role is expected to continue for a minimum of six months, with the potential for extension. Occasional travel to TransAlta operating sites is required.

A DAY IN THE LIFE

  • Developing and implementing a fleet-wide critical spares strategy to support the reliability and performance of TransAlta's gas fleet.
  • Collaborating with subject matter experts to identify gaps, assess risks, and establish criticality, stocking, and redundancy requirements for critical spare parts.
  • Defining and maintaining standardized processes for the identification, classification, and ongoing management of critical spares.
  • Conducting risk assessments related to spare parts availability, equipment failure modes, and potential impacts to operations.
  • Aligning critical spares strategies with existing asset reliability programs, maintenance strategies, and business objectives.
  • Identifying single points of failure and recommending mitigation strategies to reduce operational risk.
  • Analyzing inventory levels and practices to develop optimized stocking strategies that support reliability while balancing inventory investment.
  • Evaluating opportunities for standardization, interchangeability, shared spares, and regional stocking approaches across the fleet.
  • Working with site teams to improve the accuracy and completeness of critical spare data within enterprise systems and documentation.
  • Developing and maintaining dashboards, reports, and key performance indicators to monitor spares availability, utilization, and performance.
  • Using data analytics and digital tools to support decision-making and drive continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Partnering with Supply Chain Management and Procurement teams to assess supplier risks, optimize lead times, and strengthen contingency planning for critical components.
  • Supporting equipment lifecycle planning and obsolescence management through collaboration with engineering and technical teams.
  • Working closely with maintenance and operations teams to align critical spare strategies with outage planning, maintenance activities, and budget considerations.
  • Leading cross-functional projects focused on improving critical spares management, inventory optimization, and execution across the fleet.
  • Managing project deliverables and communicating recommendations, risks, and strategic priorities to stakeholders and senior leadership.
  • Delivering critical spares roadmaps, risk mitigation plans, inventory optimization strategies, standardized frameworks, and performance metrics that support long-term fleet reliability and operational excellence.

ABOUT YOU

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline and registered as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with APEGA, or another provincial association with inter-provincial mobility.
  • 7+ years of experience in asset management, project management, reliability, maintenance, or supply chain within the energy, power generation, or gas turbine industry.
  • Strong understanding of gas turbine systems, asset reliability, and maintenance practices.
  • Experience managing cross-functional projects and working with multiple stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Experience with risk assessment, lifecycle costing, and inventory optimization.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • PMP designation or equivalent project management certification is considered an asset.
  • This is a safety sensitive position which will require successful completion of pre-employment testing as a condition of employment
