Job description

OVERVIEW

TITLE: Student Research Assistant

LOCATION: St. Paul Campus

PAY RATE: $16.50

HOURS:  10-15 hours per week

Job Summary:  The position involves working in a biology department lab with Dr. Amy Verhoeven on projects related to photosynthetic stress acclimation.  Tools used include chlorophyll fluorescence, isolation of plant pigments and HPLC analysis of them, isolation of photosynthetic proteins and western blotting.  Research questions include: how do evergreen plants cope with light during winter when it is too cold for photosynthesis?  Are conifers able to acclimate to low light conditions?

Essential Functions:  These will vary depending on the specific project but will include:

  • Pigment isolation and HPLC analysis of pigments
  • Thylakoid isolation electrophoresis and western blotting
  • Data analysis
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Student must be a biology or biochemistry major interested in gaining some laboratory research experience
  • Successful completion of coursework in biology and chemistry is required
