Job description

Acting Out is seeking an experienced Vocal Instructor to join our teaching team for the 2026–27 season.

This is a great opportunity for a voice teacher who loves working with young performers and wants to do more than simply teach back-to-back lessons. In addition to private vocal instruction, our teacher will have the opportunity to play a creative role in our Winter and Spring Vocal Concerts and become an important part of our growing vocal program.

For more than 25 years, Acting Out has provided high-quality acting and musical theatre training to young performers throughout the NY/NJ area. We work with everyone from students discovering their voices for the first time to experienced young performers preparing for auditions and professional opportunities.

The Position

You'll primarily teach private voice lessons to students ages 9–17, with occasional younger students and adult clients.

Most lessons are 30 minutes, with 45- and 60-minute sessions offered for audition preparation, more intensive coaching, or by client request.

Our vocal program is primarily focused on musical theatre, so we're looking for someone with a strong understanding of musical theatre vocal technique and repertoire. Experience with contemporary/pop and/or classical voice is a plus but is not required.

We're particularly interested in a teacher who understands that great musical theatre singing isn't just about producing a great sound. We want our students developing healthy vocal technique while learning how to act, tell a story, and communicate through a song.

Schedule

Lessons are offered primarily Monday–Friday between 3:00 and 8:00 PM at our Westfield location, with the possibility of teaching one day per week at our Metuchen studio.

You do not need to be available all five days. We are happy to consider strong candidates who are available 2–3 weekdays, particularly those who would be interested in adding additional days as their student roster grows.

Teaching hours are based on student enrollment and scheduling. While lessons may be offered throughout the 3:00–8:00 PM window, a full five-hour teaching schedule each day is not guaranteed, and some teaching days may be shorter.

Our goal is to build a consistent roster around the selected teacher's availability and expand that schedule as enrollment grows.

Lessons begin September 8, 2026. Availability the week prior for staff meetings and preparation is preferred.

Winter & Spring Vocal Concerts

One of the highlights of our vocal program is our Winter and Spring Vocal Concerts.

These are not simply traditional recitals. They're collaborative, creative showcases built around our students and their individual strengths.

Our Vocal Instructor will have the opportunity to help select material, prepare students, organize the program, and shape and conduct the performances in collaboration with the Acting Out team.

Additional compensation is provided for this work.

What We're Looking For

  • Prior experience teaching voice to children and teenagers
  • Strong knowledge of healthy vocal technique
  • Strong background in musical theatre voice and repertoire
  • Ability to work with students at different ages, skill levels, and levels of experience
  • Understanding of acting, storytelling, and song interpretation
  • Excellent communication with students, parents, and staff
  • Reliability and professionalism
  • Bachelor's degree in Voice, Musical Theatre, Music Education, Theatre, or a related field preferred
  • Contemporary/pop and/or classical vocal experience is a plus
  • Piano/accompaniment skills are helpful but not required

Most importantly, we're looking for a strong teacher and collaborator who takes vocal training seriously while creating an environment where young performers feel comfortable experimenting, taking risks, and developing their individual voices.

Compensation & Benefits

Teaching Rate: $40–$55/hour, commensurate with experience, training, and availability.

This is a part-time W-2 employee position.

Teachers are also compensated for required meetings, assigned planning or administrative work, and other non-teaching responsibilities. Additional compensation is provided for planning, organizing, and conducting our Winter and Spring Vocal Concerts.

Part-time employees are eligible to participate in Acting Out's 401(k) program, subject to plan eligibility requirements.

Paid vacation and employer-sponsored health benefits are not currently offered for part-time positions.

Location

Primary: Westfield, NJ
Possible Secondary Location: Metuchen, NJ

To Apply

Please submit your resume along with a brief introduction describing your vocal training, teaching experience, and experience working with young performers.

Please also tell us:

  • Which weekdays you're available between 3:00 and 8:00 PM
  • Whether you'd be interested in adding teaching days as your student roster grows
  • Your experience teaching musical theatre voice and repertoire
  • Any additional experience with contemporary/pop or classical voice, audition coaching, piano/accompaniment, or directing vocal performances

We're looking for someone who wants to become part of the Acting Out community and help our students develop not only stronger voices, but stronger skills as performers.
