What is a part time counselor?

Part time counselors are professionals who provide counseling services on a flexible or reduced-hour basis, rather than working full time. They may work in schools, clinics, community organizations, or private practices, helping clients with issues such as mental health, career guidance, or personal development. Part time counselors often balance their schedules to accommodate other commitments or offer services during evenings and weekends. Their responsibilities and qualifications are generally similar to those of full-time counselors, though their caseloads may be smaller. This role is ideal for those seeking flexibility in their work-life balance while still making a positive impact.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part time counselor?

To thrive as a Part Time Counselor, you generally need a degree in counseling, psychology, or a related field, along with relevant licensure or certification depending on your location. Familiarity with counseling software, electronic record-keeping systems, and assessment tools is typically required. Strong interpersonal skills, active listening, and empathy help counselors build trust and effectively support clients. These competencies ensure that counselors can provide ethical, effective guidance and emotional support, even within limited part-time hours.

How does a part time counselor typically coordinate with full-time staff and other team members to support clients effectively?

As a part-time counselor, collaboration with full-time staff and other professionals is essential to maintain continuity of care for clients. This often involves attending regular team meetings, sharing progress notes through secure digital systems, and participating in case consultations. While schedules may differ, part-time counselors usually coordinate closely with supervisors and case managers to ensure everyone is updated on client needs and treatment plans. Open communication and flexibility are key to successfully integrating into the broader counseling team and providing consistent support.

Hazel Health

Macon, GA โ€ข Remote

Part-time

Job description

Help students get the mental health care they deserve.

At Hazel Health, we're transforming access to pediatric mental health care by partnering with schools to bring high-quality virtual therapy directly to students.

We've also entered an exciting new chapter. Hazel Health recently joined forces with Little Otter, a leading provider of whole-family pediatric mental health care. Together, we're expanding access to evidence-based behavioral health services and creating new opportunities to support children and families with innovative, high-quality care.

As a Hazel therapist, you'll have the flexibility of a part-time virtual role with the support of a collaborative clinical team, a steady stream of referrals, and the stability of W-2 employment. We handle the administrative work so you can focus on delivering meaningful care that changes lives.

Why Clinicians Choose HazelFlexibility
  • Build a schedule that works for you—set your own availability and adjust your hours as needed.
  • Enjoy the stability of a W-2 role with the flexibility of part-time virtual work.
Support
  • Focus on care while we handle referrals, credentialing, billing, and bi-weekly payroll.
  • Deliver care through our secure telehealth platform and easy-to-use EHR.
  • Receive clinical support through onboarding, consultation groups, an on-call support line, and weekly clinician newsletters.
Growth & Impact
  • Access free continuing education and opportunities for ongoing professional development.
  • Join a collaborative team committed to clinical excellence and improving outcomes for children.
  • Help students access high-quality mental health care they might not otherwise receive.
What You'll Do
  • Provide evidence-based virtual therapy to K–12 students.
  • Complete comprehensive assessments, establish diagnoses, and develop individualized treatment plans.
  • Partner with families, school staff, and care teams to support student success.
  • Maintain timely clinical documentation and deliver care aligned with evidence-based best practices.
  • Assess and respond to clinical risk while following organizational safety protocols.
What You'll Bring
  • Active, unrestricted Georgia license (LCSW, LMFT, LPCC).
  • Experience providing therapy to children and adolescents.
  • Comfortable delivering care via telehealth.
  • Strong clinical judgment, communication, and documentation skills.
  • Passion for expanding access to high-quality pediatric mental health care.
Schedule

This is a flexible, part-time virtual role designed to fit alongside your existing clinical work.

To ensure we can meet the needs of students and families, clinicians are expected to maintain availability for at least 7 sessions per week during peak demand hours, which include:

  • School hours for school-based sessions
  • After-school hours
  • Evenings
  • Weekends
Compensation

We believe clinicians should be compensated for the full value of their work—not just time spent in session. As a W-2 Hazel clinician, you'll receive paid administrative time, compensation for eligible client no-shows, and a steady stream of referrals while we handle billing and credentialing so you can focus on providing exceptional care.

Session Rates

Zone 1 (Alaska, California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, Oregon, and Washington)

  • $40–$85 per completed clinical session (based on session length)
  • $30 for eligible late cancellations (within 24 hours) or no-show appointments

Zone 2 (All other U.S. states where this position is available)

  • $30–$80 per completed clinical session (based on session length)
  • $20 for eligible late cancellations (within 24 hours) or no-show appointments

In addition, required training, meetings, documentation completed outside of compensated sessions, and other approved non-session work are paid at $20 per hour. Therapists are compensated for all time worked in accordance with applicable federal, state, and local laws.

Equal Opportunity

Hazel Health is an Equal Opportunity Employer. We are committed to fostering a diverse, inclusive, and equitable workplace and welcome qualified applicants from all backgrounds and experiences. Hazel considers qualified applicants with arrest and conviction records in accordance with applicable federal, state, and local laws. A background check is required following a contingent offer of employment.
