Job description

Job Summary: Provides biblical counsel for individuals and families participating in SOH programs. Counseling is to be biblical, motivational, and in alignment with the motivational phases of the program. Counseling will assist individuals and families in addressing root issues, developing an action plan, the exchange process, and completion of requirements for each phase of the program.

Job Responsibilities:

  1. Provide biblical counseling for individuals and families participating in the Star of Hope programs. Counseling will be grounded in Scripture, aligned with resident goals and Star of Hope’s program model, and supported by the principles and framework of Star of Hope’s proprietary curriculum, The Source. Counseling sessions will typically be conducted in 45–50-minute weekly sessions or as otherwise assigned.
  2. Participate in interdepartmental staffing and coordinate all counseling efforts with appropriate program staff, including care coordinators, work therapy staff, resident ministry staff, Children’s ministry staff, and other relevant departments. Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to support consistent goals, resident care, program expectations, and progress. 
  3. Build rapport with residents through compassionate biblically grounded relationships. Pray with residents and apply biblical principles to their individual circumstances, needs, and goals. Provide counseling and crisis support using biblical, trauma-informed approach that recognizes residents’ experiences while promoting hope, personal responsibility, spiritual growth, and healthy change. 
  4. Facilitate Grow Groups and other group counseling sessions as assigned, creating a safe engaging, and biblical grounded environment for conversation, reflection, accountability, and growth. Be prepared to support or facilitate The Source curriculum sessions and other program instruction as needed, including providing coverage in the absence of an instructor. 
  5. Communicate relevant updates regarding residents’ counseling participation and progress to appropriate program staff and management while maintaining professional boundaries and appropriate confidentiality.
  6. Maintain accurate and timely counseling documentation and resident records in accordance with Star of Hope policies and established documentation practices. 
  7. Participate in Biblical Counseling trainings, staff trainings, and conferences as assigned; study appropriate literature and resources relevant to the role; and maintain any current professional or ministry certifications. 

Other Job Responsibilities:

  1. Provide appropriate reports and follow-up information as directed by Manager.
  2. Participate in Ministry and prayer activities, as appropriate.
  3. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education, Skills & Experience: Master's degree in biblical counseling, Christian Counseling, Counseling, Social Work, or a related field required. Minimum 3 years’ experience counseling from a Christian perspective. Biblical Counseling Certification or training preferred. Strong ability to counsel those experiencing crisis. Experience in working with the homeless population preferred. Knowledge of biblical understanding and experience with substance abuse issues, mental health conditions, and homelessness preferred. Strong knowledge in all Microsoft Office applications (Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel) required.

College/Professional level abilities expected. Ability to be tactful and diplomatic with clients and co-workers. Able to organize and coordinate daily tasks in the performance of the job duties. Ability to perform multiple tasks, goals and projects. Ability to identify and handle stressful and potentially explosive behavior among the residents and potential residents of the shelter. Strong oral and written communication skills required. Ability to de-escalate angry and combative individuals effectively. Strong conflict resolution skills necessary. Desire and strong ability to evangelize and share the Gospel with hurting people is required.

Be able to work respectfully, professionally and in a Christ-like manner with everyone, able to maintain required client/staff boundaries and possess a willingness to serve the Lord in a ministry that deals with homeless men, women and children.

Equipment Used: Phone, copy machine, Voice Over Internet phone system, computer, printer, PowerPoint, and other A/V equipment. Must be able to operate a 12-passenger van. Valid Texas Driver’s License with acceptable driving record and current liability insurance required.

Work Environment: Office, intake booths and other common areas of the shelter. Schedule is subject to change to meet the needs of the mission, i.e. may be required to work weekends, holidays and during emergency situations. Exposure to infectious diseases, poor hygiene, drug usage, verbal and physical abuse and other emergency situations relative to the homeless population is normal. Business casual dress in accordance with the Star of Hope dress code. 

Relations with Others: Frequent contact with homeless individuals and families. Ability to communicate effectively with persons from a variety of ethnic, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. May also interact with donors, volunteers, social workers and staff from other agencies.

Physical Requirements: Ability to sit, stand, walk around for long periods of time. Ability to move freely up and down stairs and around a large building inside and outside. Able to lift 20 pounds.
