What is a part time counselor?

Part time counselors are professionals who provide counseling services on a flexible or reduced-hour basis, rather than working full time. They may work in schools, clinics, community organizations, or private practices, helping clients with issues such as mental health, career guidance, or personal development. Part time counselors often balance their schedules to accommodate other commitments or offer services during evenings and weekends. Their responsibilities and qualifications are generally similar to those of full-time counselors, though their caseloads may be smaller. This role is ideal for those seeking flexibility in their work-life balance while still making a positive impact.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part time counselor?

To thrive as a Part Time Counselor, you generally need a degree in counseling, psychology, or a related field, along with relevant licensure or certification depending on your location. Familiarity with counseling software, electronic record-keeping systems, and assessment tools is typically required. Strong interpersonal skills, active listening, and empathy help counselors build trust and effectively support clients. These competencies ensure that counselors can provide ethical, effective guidance and emotional support, even within limited part-time hours.

How does a part time counselor typically coordinate with full-time staff and other team members to support clients effectively?

As a part-time counselor, collaboration with full-time staff and other professionals is essential to maintain continuity of care for clients. This often involves attending regular team meetings, sharing progress notes through secure digital systems, and participating in case consultations. While schedules may differ, part-time counselors usually coordinate closely with supervisors and case managers to ensure everyone is updated on client needs and treatment plans. Open communication and flexibility are key to successfully integrating into the broader counseling team and providing consistent support.

Job description

JOB TITLE:
School Psychologist

REPORTS TO:
Director of Specialized Services

THE OPPORTUNITY:

Emerald Academy is looking for an innovative, highly-motivated, and values-aligned leader to help grow scholars into leaders in urban Knoxville. EA is seeking individuals who are goal orientated and dedicated to the school's mission, vision, and values. These leaders will have the unique opportunity to mold the next chapter of Emerald Academy by embracing the student-centered learning environment that every child will be college-bound and career ready. Emerald Academy believes that it is possible to change the trajectory for our city's young people and that it can be done at scale. Faculty endeavor to work each day to help accomplish the school's three goals. Every scholar will read at or above grade level, every scholar will be well prepared to attend a four-year college, and EA will be ranked in the top 5% of all schools in the state of Tennessee.

JOB SUMMARY:

The school psychologist provides psychological services for the school, primarily involving the evaluation process for special education. The School Psychologist would be responsible for records review, conducting assessments for the evaluation to determine eligibility for special education services, and completing psycho-educational reports. The School Psychologist will be responsible for reviewing evaluation results with IEP team members, and completing all paperwork in compliance with the State of Tennessee (e.g., evaluation summary reports, eligibility, psycho-educational reports of assessment results, and prior written notice).

JOB GOALS:

  • Conduct comprehensive psycho-educational evaluations to assess scholars' cognitive, academic, behavioral, and social-emotional functioning.
  • Interpret and communicate assessment results to families, teachers, and support staff.
  • Use data-driven decision-making to recommend interventions and accommodations for scholars.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and 504 Plans as needed.
  • Work as part of a multidisciplinary team, including special education staff, EA counselors, and administrators.
  • Serve as a liaison between EA, families, and community agencies to connect scholars with necessary services.
  • Ensure all evaluations, interventions, and programs comply with federal and state regulations.
  • Advocate for the needs of scholars to ensure equitable access to resources and support.

QUALIFICATIONS/EXPECTATIONS:

  • Master's or Specialist (Ed.S.) degree in School Psychology (Doctoral degree preferred).
  • Tennessee licensure or eligibility for licensure as a School Psychologist.
  • Experience working in K-8 education, preferably in a charter or urban school setting.
  • Strong understanding of special education laws, MTSS (Multi-Tiered System of Supports), and PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports).
  • Experience working with TN PULSE is preferred
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, scholar-centered environment.
  • Commitment to the mission of ECS and EA.

THE ACADEMY:

Emerald Academy (EA) is a free, independently-operated, K-8 college preparatory school. We are developing in our scholars the skills, habits, and values for them to graduate from high school, enroll in college, and succeed in life. Specifically, we aim to have all of our scholars reading on or above grade level by third grade, to have all of our scholars complete Algebra I in eighth grade, and to have our school rated among the top five percent of Tennessee public schools by our tenth year of operation. The faculty and staff at Emerald Academy are critical to the achievement of these goals, and each member of the staff carries responsibilities that help achieve these goals.

It is the policy of Emerald Charter Schools (ECS) to provide employment opportunities to all people without regard to race, color, sex, age, or national origin.
