What is a part time Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA)?

Part-time COTAs are Certified Occupational Therapy Assistants who work fewer hours than full-time staff, often providing support to occupational therapists in helping patients develop, recover, or maintain daily living and work skills. Their duties include assisting with therapy sessions, documenting patient progress, and ensuring that treatment plans are followed. Part-time COTAs may work in various settings, such as hospitals, schools, nursing homes, or outpatient clinics, and their schedules can be flexible to accommodate personal or employer needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part time Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA)?

To thrive as a Part Time COTA, you need an associate degree from an accredited occupational therapy assistant program, a current state license, and a solid understanding of therapeutic techniques. Familiarity with electronic medical records (EMRs), rehabilitation equipment, and standardized assessment tools is often required. Strong interpersonal skills, adaptability, and effective communication are crucial for building rapport with patients and collaborating with supervising occupational therapists. These skills ensure safe, effective, and patient-centered care while maintaining compliance with healthcare protocols.

What are some common challenges faced by part time Certified Occupational Therapy Assistants (COTAs) and how can they be managed?

Part-time COTAs often face the challenge of maintaining continuity of care with clients due to their reduced hours. They may need to coordinate closely with other team members to ensure that treatment plans are followed consistently. Effective communication and thorough documentation are key to overcoming these challenges, as they help keep the entire care team informed and aligned. Additionally, part-time roles may offer less predictability in scheduling and caseload, so flexibility and strong organizational skills are essential.

Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) – Part-Time

Compassionate ABA & Therapeutic Services, LLC (CABATS)
Manassas & Springfield, Virginia

Join a Growing Pediatric Therapy Team

Compassionate ABA & Therapeutic Services is seeking a dependable, engaging, and compassionate Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) to join our growing multidisciplinary team on a part-time basis.

This is an excellent opportunity for a COTA who wants a flexible schedule, meaningful one-on-one work with children and adolescents, and the opportunity to collaborate with Occupational Therapists, Speech-Language Pathologists, BCBAs, BCaBAs, RBTs, and other clinical professionals.

We are looking for someone who wants to become a consistent part of our team—not simply move from appointment to appointment. Our goal is to provide the clinical support, organization, and flexibility needed for our therapists to focus on delivering excellent care.

Why Join CABATS?

Flexible Part-Time Scheduling
We understand that many COTAs balance multiple professional and personal responsibilities. We are open to developing a consistent part-time schedule based on mutual availability and client needs.

Opportunity to Build Your Caseload
Start part-time and have the opportunity to increase your caseload and hours as our OT program continues to grow.

Multidisciplinary Clinical Environment
Our clients may receive ABA, Speech, and Occupational Therapy within the same organization, creating opportunities for meaningful interdisciplinary collaboration and continuity of care.

OT Clinical Support
COTAs work under the direction and supervision of an Occupational Therapist (OTR/L) and have access to clinical collaboration regarding treatment planning, client progress, and treatment needs.

Clinic-Based Opportunities
Provide therapy in a structured clinical environment with access to therapy materials and spaces designed to support movement, sensory-motor, fine-motor, adaptive, and functional skill development.

Meaningful Pediatric Caseload
Work with children and adolescents with a variety of developmental and functional needs while building long-term therapeutic relationships with clients and families.

What You'll Do

The COTA will provide occupational therapy interventions under the supervision of an OTR/L and in accordance with each client's established plan of care.

Responsibilities include:

  • Provide individualized occupational therapy treatment
  • Implement interventions established within the OT plan of care
  • Address fine-motor, visual-motor, sensory-motor, self-care, adaptive, and functional skills as clinically indicated
  • Promote independence with activities of daily living
  • Provide developmentally appropriate therapeutic activities
  • Monitor client response to intervention
  • Accurately document treatment sessions and client progress
  • Communicate meaningful changes or concerns to the supervising OT
  • Collaborate with families and the interdisciplinary treatment team
  • Participate in supervision and case consultation
  • Maintain treatment materials and therapy spaces
  • Complete documentation within required timelines
  • Maintain consistent attendance for assigned clients
  • Follow all organizational, payer, professional, and regulatory requirements

What We're Looking For

We are especially interested in a COTA who is:

  • Reliable and consistent with scheduled clients
  • Warm, engaging, and comfortable working with children
  • Organized and timely with documentation
  • Comfortable working independently while maintaining appropriate OT supervision
  • Collaborative with other disciplines
  • Responsive to clinical feedback
  • Professional in communication with families and colleagues
  • Proactive when a client is struggling or treatment needs to be adjusted
  • Interested in helping build and strengthen a growing OT program

Qualifications

  • Current Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) certification
  • Current or eligible Virginia licensure as an Occupational Therapy Assistant
  • Graduate of an accredited Occupational Therapy Assistant program
  • Pediatric experience preferred
  • Experience with autism and developmental disabilities strongly preferred
  • Ability to complete required background and compliance requirements
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Reliable transportation
  • Ability to maintain a consistent agreed-upon schedule

Schedule

Part-Time

We are particularly interested in candidates with availability during:

Weekday afternoons/evenings and/or Saturdays

We are willing to discuss a schedule that provides the right candidate with consistent blocks of clients rather than scattered appointments whenever caseload availability allows.

Opportunities may be available at our:

Manassas, VA Clinic
Springfield, VA Clinic

Candidates interested in working across both locations are encouraged to apply.

Compensation & Benefits

CABATS offers competitive COTA compensation based on experience, availability, employment classification, and qualifications.

Eligible employees may also have access to:

  • Health insurance
  • PTO
  • 401(k) eligibility based on plan requirements
  • Flexible part-time scheduling
  • Consistent scheduling whenever possible
  • Ongoing OT supervision and clinical support
  • Multidisciplinary collaboration
  • Professional development opportunities
  • Opportunity to increase hours as the OT caseload grows
  • Opportunities for long-term growth within the organization

Help Us Grow Something Strong

Our OT program is continuing to expand, and we are looking for COTAs who want to be part of that growth.

We value clinicians who are dependable, communicative, clinically engaged, and committed to their clients. In return, we want to provide an environment where COTAs have appropriate supervision, interdisciplinary support, scheduling flexibility, and opportunities to grow.
