Part Time Copy Editing information

What is part time copy editing?

Part time copy editing involves reviewing and correcting written content for grammar, spelling, punctuation, and style on a flexible or reduced-hour schedule. Part time copy editors work with various types of materials, such as articles, websites, or marketing materials, to ensure clarity and consistency. This role allows professionals to balance work with other commitments while still contributing to high-quality published content.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part time copy editor?

To thrive as a Part Time Copy Editor, you need excellent grammar, punctuation, and spelling skills, often supported by a background in English, journalism, or a related field. Familiarity with style guides (such as AP or Chicago Manual of Style) and proficiency with editing tools like Microsoft Word, Google Docs, and track changes features are typical requirements. Strong attention to detail, time management, and effective communication help you stand out in this role. These abilities ensure clear, error-free content and efficient collaboration, which are crucial for meeting deadlines and maintaining publication quality.

How do part-time copy editors typically balance multiple projects and deadlines while working with different teams?

Part-time copy editors often juggle assignments from various clients or departments, which requires strong organizational skills and clear communication. They usually manage multiple deadlines by prioritizing tasks, using project management tools, and maintaining regular check-ins with writers and project leads. Collaboration is key, so part-time editors frequently coordinate with content creators, marketing teams, or publishers to clarify expectations and ensure consistency in style and tone. This dynamic environment helps copy editors build versatility and expand their professional network, which can lead to additional opportunities.

Job description

Detroit Sponge & Chamois Co. – Wixom, Michigan
Part-Time | 20–25 Hours Per Week | $24–$28/Hour, Based on Experience

Looking for a part-time marketing position where you can actually see the impact of your work?

Detroit Sponge & Chamois Co. is a family-owned small business that has served the professional window cleaning industry for more than 85 years. We're a small team with fewer than 10 employees, and we're looking for an E-Commerce & Digital Marketing Coordinator to help us improve and grow our online presence.

This is not a large corporate marketing department where you'll be responsible for one small piece of a larger project. You'll work directly with company leadership and have hands-on involvement with our website, product content, email marketing, graphics, promotions and other digital projects.

We're looking for someone who enjoys getting things done, can work independently and is comfortable wearing several hats.

What You'll Do

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Maintain and improve our Shopify e-commerce website
  • Create, edit and optimize product listings, collections and website pages
  • Write and edit product descriptions, educational content and marketing copy
  • Create graphics and promotional materials using Canva or similar tools
  • Assist with email marketing campaigns and customer communications
  • Help maintain consistent website imagery and content
  • Perform basic SEO improvements, including page titles, meta descriptions, keywords, internal links and image alt text
  • Assist with social media content and company announcements
  • Maintain interactive calendar with team members for digital media schedule
  • Use AI tools appropriately to assist with research, drafting, editing and content development
  • Review website content for accuracy, consistency and opportunities for improvement
  • Monitor basic website and marketing performance
  • Help identify and execute new digital marketing opportunities
  • Manage projects from idea through completion

Skills We're Looking For

  • Strong written communication, grammar and proofreading skills
  • Hands-on Shopify or comparable e-commerce experience strongly preferred
  • Proficiency with Canva or similar graphic-design software
  • Experience creating or maintaining website content
  • Basic understanding of SEO and e-commerce best practices
  • Familiarity with email marketing
  • Comfortable working with Microsoft Office and Google Workspace
  • Experience using AI tools such as ChatGPT productively and responsibly
  • Basic HTML knowledge is helpful but not required
  • Google Analytics and/or Google Search Console experience is a plus
  • Photography and basic video editing skills are a plus

Formal Shopify or Canva certification is not required. We're more interested in what you can actually do.

The Person We're Looking For

Technical skills matter, but fit is equally important.

Because we're a small company, this position is best suited for someone who:

  • Is self-motivated and doesn't require constant supervision
  • Notices things that could be improved and takes initiative
  • Is organized and follows projects through to completion
  • Can switch comfortably between different types of projects
  • Is willing to learn and figure things out
  • Pays close attention to details
  • Communicates openly and works well with a small team
  • Is comfortable working directly with the owner and other team members
  • Takes ownership of their work and accepts accountability
  • Enjoys contributing outside of a narrowly defined corporate job description when needed

A Little About Our Environment

We're intentionally a small business.

That means we don't have layers of management or separate departments for every function. We work together, communicate directly and rely on each person to take ownership of their responsibilities.

For the right person, that creates a great deal of independence. Your ideas can be heard, decisions can be made quickly, and you'll be able to see the results of your work.

If you prefer a highly structured corporate environment with narrowly defined responsibilities and multiple levels of support, this position may not be the best fit.

If you enjoy variety, independence and being an important part of a small team, we'd like to meet you.

Schedule & Compensation

  • $24–$28 per hour, based on experience
  • Approximately 20–25 hours per week
  • Monday–Friday daytime hours
  • Some flexibility in establishing a consistent weekly schedule
  • On-site position at our Wixom, Michigan location
  • No regular evening or weekend work

What We Offer

  • 401(k) with company match
  • Dedicated office/workspace
  • Consistent weekday work environment
  • Direct access to company leadership
  • Considerable independence and ownership of your work
  • Established family-owned company with more than 85 years in business
  • Opportunity to have a meaningful impact on the company's digital presence

Experience

Previous professional experience with e-commerce, digital marketing, website management, content creation or a related field is preferred.

A degree in marketing is not required. Demonstrated ability, good judgment, reliability and relevant hands-on experience are more important to us.

When applying, we'd love to see examples of your work. These might include websites or Shopify stores you've worked on, graphics you've created, email campaigns, product content, social media work or other digital marketing projects.
