Part Time Contractor information

What is a part time contractor?

A part time contractor is an individual who is hired to perform specific tasks or services for a company on a part-time basis, typically without being considered a full employee. They usually work under a contract that outlines the scope, duration, and payment terms of their work. Unlike full-time employees, part time contractors often have more flexible schedules, are responsible for their own taxes, and may not receive employee benefits such as health insurance or paid time off. This arrangement is common in industries like construction, IT, consulting, and creative services.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part time contractor?

To thrive as a Part Time Contractor, you need relevant expertise in your field, strong self-management abilities, and a track record of delivering quality work independently. Familiarity with project management tools like Trello or Asana, digital communication platforms, and sometimes specific certifications or licenses are often required. Exceptional time management, adaptability, and proactive communication are the soft skills that distinguish top contractors. These skills and qualities are crucial for meeting client expectations, managing variable workloads, and maintaining long-term professional relationships.

How does working as a part-time contractor impact collaboration with full-time employees and project teams?

As a part-time contractor, you may work remotely or on-site and often join existing teams for specific projects or tasks. While you typically have more flexible hours, communication and coordination are crucial, especially when aligning your schedule with full-time staff and meeting project deadlines. Many organizations use collaboration tools, regular check-ins, and clear documentation to ensure contractors are integrated into the workflow and can contribute effectively. Building relationships with team members and maintaining proactive communication can help you overcome any barriers associated with part-time or remote status.

Job description

About The Role
We are seeking an experienced GovCon accounting professional who enjoys owning client relationships, solving complex accounting challenges, and working directly with government contractors. This is a hands-on role responsible for managing the full accounting cycle while serving as a trusted accounting advisor to assigned clients.

This position requires prior hands-on Government Contracting (GovCon) accounting experience, including indirect rate structures, cost accounting, and compliance with Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR) and Defense Contract Audit Agency (DCAA) requirements. Because of the complexity of our client work, this role is not designed as an entry point for candidates new to GovCon accounting.

This is a remote, part-time position. Work schedules are flexible but must support client service needs, deadlines, and participation in scheduled client and internal meetings.

The ideal candidate enjoys building long-term client relationships, takes ownership of their work, communicates proactively, and is equally comfortable rolling up their sleeves to complete day-to-day accounting while discussing financial results and advising clients.

Key Responsibilities

Client Ownership & Communication
  • Serve as the primary accounting lead for assigned clients, owning all deliverables, timelines, and communication.
  • Build trusted relationships through responsiveness, accuracy, and proactive support.
  • Lead recurring client meetings to review financials, trends, and upcoming needs.
  • Anticipate issues and provide practical, forward-looking solutions aligned with client goals.
  • Advise GovCon clients on compliance, indirect rate impacts, and contract-driven financial considerations.
  • Communicate clearly on DCAA expectations, contractor responsibilities, and FAR-based accounting implications.
Hands-On Accounting Execution
  • Perform full-cycle accounting, including AP/AR, payroll coordination, reconciliations, journal entries, and month-end close.
  • Prepare timely, accurate financial statements and supporting schedules.
  • Maintain clean, organized, audit-ready books.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP and FAR, including FAR Part 31 cost principles.
  • Track and report allowable vs. unallowable costs in accordance with FAR.
Reporting, Analysis & Strategic Support
  • Analyze financial results and deliver clear, actionable insights.
  • Support budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow planning.
  • Assist with audits, requests, and ad hoc reporting.
  • Identify opportunities to strengthen controls and improve processes.
  • Prepare and analyze indirect rate structures (overhead, G&A, fringe) and assess impact on profitability.
  • Support DCAA audits, incurred cost submissions, and rate discussions.
  • Assist with contract-level reporting, funding tracking, and compliance-driven analysis.
Internal Collaboration & Workflow Management
  • Coordinate with internal team members while retaining ownership of final deliverables.
  • Review work for accuracy and complete corrections as needed.
  • Contribute to standardized processes, templates, and best practices.
  • Help refine GovCon-specific processes aligned with FAR, DCAA, and contractor expectations.
Deadline & Priority Management
  • Manage assigned client calendars and deliverables, consistently meeting deadlines without prompting.
  • Maintain strong organization and follow-through across all accounts.
  • Track and meet GovCon-specific deadlines, including audits, rate submissions, and contract reporting.

Qualifications
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience with GovCon accounting, including indirect rate structures, incurred cost submissions (ICS), DCAA audits, and FAR compliance.
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field.
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including full-cycle accounting and GovCon accounting responsibilities.
  • Experience in a client-facing, outsourced, or multi-entity environment strongly preferred.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP, internal controls, and FAR-based cost accounting.
  • Proficiency with accounting software and cloud-based systems; PROCAS and/or Unanet a plus.
  • Excellent communication, organization, and time management skills.
  • Ability to manage assigned clients and competing priorities within a part-time schedule while maintaining accuracy, responsiveness, and professionalism; prior experience managing multiple clients in an outsourced accounting or consulting environment strongly preferred.

This is a remote position.
