Job description

Position:Part-Time Commanders (Paramedic Services)Start Date:TBCEmployment Status:Part-timeReporting To:Deputy Chief of OperationsUnion Affiliation:Non-union Posting Date:July 7, 2026Closing Date:July 28, 2026 at 4:30pmPosition Summary:Reporting to the Deputy Chief of Operations, the Commander is responsible for providing day to day supervision of on-duty paramedics and use of capital resources to ensure efficient and effective provision of Paramedic Services.
 Primary Responsibilities:
  • Provide ongoing supervision and leadership for Paramedics and students, including orientation and training of new staff in job specific hazard recognition and control and health and safety policies and procedures, planning/scheduling of work, performance management and ensure qualification standards are maintained
  • Responsible for the "day to day" operations and deployment of supplies, equipment, vehicles and emergency resources to standard
  • Research, development and implementation of special projects that are assigned
  • Reviews patient care records, makes recommendations for improvement and communicates findings to paramedic staff, senior management staff and external partners when required
  • Maintains, fleet, capital and human resources in a state of readiness to respond to all emergencies in order to meet the emergency deployment plans. Emergency Coverage Agreement is followed regarding deployment of resources i.e. interface with Central Ambulance Communication Centre
  • Trains, monitors and ensures staff compliance with standard operating procedures, local collective agreement and all applicable acts and regulations
  • Monitors Staff and CACC for compliance to approved County PS deployment plan.
  • Reviews, investigates and takes appropriate action on incidents
  • Provides emergency medical first response and maintain County emergency coverage when required
  • Review, investigate and make recommendations to senior management for service improvement
  • Responds to large emergencies and disasters to provide emergency leadership and command functions and arrange critical incident stress support
  • Liaises with allied emergency services, base hospital and regulatory officials/agencies at the municipal and provincial levels on issues of common concern for improved inter agency function
  • Leaders and Supervisors are responsible under the Occupational Health and Safety Act to take every precaution reasonable in the circumstances for the protection of workers. This includes ensuring the Occupational Health and Safety Act and County of Perth policies and procedures are adhered to. Leaders and Supervisors are accountable for providing job specific training including awareness of job hazards and instructions on methods of control and for monitoring workers for compliance
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
  • AEMCA certification with ability to be certified as a Primary Care Paramedic under local base hospital standards. Compliance with qualifications as an Ontario paramedic under the Ontario Ambulance ACT
  • General knowledge of the operation and maintenance of various types of equipment, vehicles and communications systems used by the Paramedic Services
  • Professional understanding of Basic Life Support Standards, provincial legislation, regulations and occupational health and safety that govern Paramedic Services along with the provincial health care system
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills for providing direction to staff, writing memo’s/reports and responds to media relations within recommended guidelines
  • Ability to be an effective team player
  • Proficient in multiple computer software applications including Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Office Suite, ESO I-medic eACR, Operative IQ inventory management and scheduling software
  • Previous experience as a Paramedic Superintendent or Commander
  • Additional post-secondary education in PS management or a related field would be an asset
Shift:Ability to work all shifts, rotations and at all stations within Perth County. Platoon and locations are variable and subject to change.
Availability requirements are governed by Perth County Paramedic Services Policy 1.41 – Part-Time Commander Availability.
 Hourly Rate:$55.57-$65.00 (based on Perth County’s 2026 salary grid). This position is eligible to participate in the County’s Pay for Performance compensation structure.
