Job description

As a valued member of the team, the Life Enrichment Assistant demonstrates a commitment to resident safety by providing quality care in accordance with the organization’s vision and mission.

Under the direction of the Lifestyle Consultant, the Recreation Assistant assists in the planning, implementing and evaluating of recreation, lifestyle and wellness services and programs to meet the various physical, emotional, social, intellectual, spiritual and leisure interests and needs of the resident.

The Life Enrichment Assistant is required to perform their duties in a manner consistent with the core values, ensure resident safety, and demonstrate customer service excellence.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Sets up the activity area as necessary and assists in transporting residents to and from program, if required;

• Participates in committees and meetings as directed;

• Participates in development and revision of departmental procedures and programs under the guidance of the Lifestyle Consultant;

• Maintains program and resident records according to departmental policies. Regularly reports participation and feedback by residents to Lifestyle Consultant;

• Maintains updates to daily events, posters and designated leisure bulletin boards;

• Assists in the completion and distribution of the monthly activity calendar.

• Implements leisure programs such as exercise classes, crafts, social events, entertainment, outings and special events as assigned by the Lifestyle Consultant;

• Participates in development of new or revised program plans;

• Assists in monitoring the residents' interests, needs and progress;

• Promotes social interaction among residents in the following ways:

 assumes leadership of assigned activities or special events

 assists new residents with orientation to the building and to the recreation program, and introduces them to the others within the residence

 promotes conversation and social interaction among residents

• Assists in dismantling and clean-up of program area as required returning area to a “tour ready” condition;

• Works cooperatively with volunteers, student and community groups;

• Adheres to established departmental policies and procedures regarding resident interaction and documentation of feedback, issues and concerns;

• Works co-operatively with other departments to meet resident needs;

• Advises supervisor or designate immediately of all team member incidents that may result in an Occupational Accident Claim, any concerns with the physical plant, incidents or injuries and completes required reports;

• Follows all health and safety policies and procedures. Works safely to reduce the risk of injury to self, co-workers, and residents;

• Wears personal protective equipment as designated;

• Maintains a clean, safe environment for residents utilizing infection control principles;

• Maintains a sound working knowledge of their role & responsibilities during all Emergency situations when working different shifts;

• Participates in drills to prepare for emergencies and attends all education sessions in relation to emergency preparedness.

• Work in accordance with the organization’s Health and Safety Policies and Procedures and in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act;

• Perform other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Experience in working with seniors including an understanding of motivation concepts with seniors;

• Understanding of leisure principles;

• Computer proficiency is an asset;

• Strong public speaking and communication skills required;

• Valid drivers license (Class F if you drive a bus);

• Current CPR certificate and First Aid;

• Must be able to set priorities and meet time and calendar deadlines as workload may fluctuate as resident needs and occupancy change.

• Effective verbal and written English communication skills required.

EDUCATION:

• Diploma or Certificate in recreation/leisure studies or equivalent

WORKING CONDITIONS:

• Interaction with male and female residents of all ethnic and cultural backgrounds;

• Combination of natural light and fluorescent lighting;

• Exposure to the elements (external building and property);

• Exposure to variable temperatures both hot and cold;

• Lifting alone and with assistance;

• Pushing/pulling content;

• Crouching, kneeling, stooping/bending for short periods of time;

• Walking and climbing stairs frequently;

• Standing for long periods of time;

• Engagement and/or exposure to various therapy programs focused on providing residents with the highest quality of life in our Homes including but not limited to pet therapy, spiritual events and musical therapy.
