Part-Time Vehicle Service & Maintenance Technician

Date: July 2026

Salary Range: $14.88-18.01

Position Type: Part-Time

Position Status: Hourly/Non-Exempt

Pay Frequency: Monthly

Location: Arkansas City Main Campus – Arkansas City, KS 

Department: Transportation      

Reports To: Administrative Assistant to the Executive Vice President of Finance & Administration

Job Summary:

The Vehicle Service & Maintenance Technician is responsible for assisting with the care, maintenance, cleanliness, and operational readiness of the College's fleet of buses, passenger vans, and other College-owned vehicles. This position performs routine inspections, coordinates preventative maintenance, assists with vehicle repairs, and supports grounds and custodial operations as assigned. The Technician helps ensure College vehicles remain safe, clean, and available for transportation services.

Position Duties:

  • Inspect College vehicles for cleanliness, safety, and operational readiness.
  • Perform routine pre-service and post-service inspections of fleet vehicles.
  • Coordinate scheduled maintenance, repairs, oil changes, tire service, inspections, and warranty work with outside vendors.
  • Maintain accurate records of vehicle maintenance, inspections, repairs, and service schedules.
  • Ensure College vehicles meet applicable federal, state, and College safety requirements.
  • Clean and maintain the interior and exterior of all College vehicles.
  • Fuel College vehicles as needed and monitor fluid levels.
  • Perform basic preventative maintenance such as checking tire pressure, windshield washer fluid, battery condition, lights, and other minor service items.
  • Report mechanical issues or safety concerns promptly to the supervisor.
  • Transport vehicles to and from repair facilities when necessary.
  • Assist with inventory and organization of vehicle supplies, equipment, and maintenance records.
  • Maintain courteous, professional, and effective working relationships with employees, vendors, and representatives of outside organizations.
  • Comply with all College policies and procedures.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Basic knowledge of vehicle maintenance and preventative service practices.
  • Ability to recognize potential mechanical and safety issues.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to safely operate College fleet vehicles.
  • Ability to maintain accurate maintenance and inspection records.
  • Ability to organize work and prioritize multiple assignments.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.

Required Qualification:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Kansas Driver's License with an acceptable driving record.
  • Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with necessary endorsements (Class B minimum, passenger, air brakes). preferred but not required.
  • Basic mechanical experience preferred.

Required Experience:

  • One year of experience in vehicle maintenance, fleet operations, automotive service, facilities maintenance, or related field preferred.

Supervisory Requirements: None.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to lift up to 50 pounds; bend, squat, stoop, climb, kneel, push, pull, and reach while servicing vehicles. Ability to stand and walk for extended periods. Manual dexterity sufficient to inspect, clean, and service vehicles. Ability to safely operate College-owned vehicles.

Work Environment:

Work is performed both indoors and outdoors and may involve exposure to extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, grease, cleaning chemicals, vehicle exhaust, loud noises, and changing weather conditions. Position may require occasional evening or weekend work to support College transportation operations.
