Pharmacy Technician I Job Description

Pharmacy technicians assist the pharmacist in the preparation and distribution of medications, maintaining the drug inventory, and maintaining patient and pharmacy records in a manner consistent with all federal, state, and local laws and regulations, as well as pharmacy policies and procedures. Pharmacy technician activities are performed under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist.

Responsibilities for Pharmacy Technician

  • Read and interpret physician's medication orders, electronically, faxed, written, or pharmacist written
  • Prepare and package medications in accordance with safety measures, including hazardous drugs
  • Aid in filling, processing, and dispensing medications, billing third parties, managing will call bin and drive through operations
  • Re-package and label medications
  • Adhere to safety practices to ensure quality care for patients
  • Help maintain the drug inventory through inventory control practices & process returns appropriately, as well as daily wholesaler orders processed to stock
  • Assist in the day-to-day activities of 340b inventory management and protocol.
  • Provide customer service by answering phone calls in a prompt and courteous manner, retrieving & triaging faxed data, instant message within clinic providers, and by face-to-face interactions
  • Triage requests and prioritize them
  • Check for expiration dates on medications on a regular basis, keeping pharmacy bays in order
  • Register operation, including drive through, as well as daily deposits
  • General cleaning of pharmacy and retail area

Qualifications for Pharmacy Technician

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required
  • Current pharmacy national technician registration/certification or ability to obtain certification
  • Pharmacy Technician licensure in West Virginia or ability to obtain Pharmacy Technician licensure
  • Basic mathematics skills including adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing in all units of measure
  • Effective computer and keyboarding skills
  • Working knowledge of pharmacy information systems
  • Strong communication skills, both written and oral
  • Strong prioritization skills and an ability to make decisions independently and effectively
  • Able to operate equipment such as computers, tablet counters, and cash registers
  • Familiarity with pharmacy practice settings, legal requirements and limitations, prescription information and calculations, drug identification and generic equivalents, drug manufacturing, packaging and labeling information, and proper drug handling and storage practices
