Trauma Data System Specialist (TDSS) - St. Francis Downtown - PRN
Candidates Must Have Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) per AHIMA
Summary of Primary Function
The Trauma Data System Specialist (TDSS) will be responsible for the Trauma Registry and meeting the requirements of the State of South Carolina and the American College of Surgeons. The TDSS, under the supervision of the Trauma Program Director, will provide data on trauma patients to meet the requirements for the Trauma Registry. The TDSS is responsible for abstracting information from patient records to assign external cause codes, Trauma Scores, Glasgow Coma Scale scores, ISS, AIS, and ICD-10 codes for all patients meeting trauma registry criteria. This includes the abstraction and entry of data from every trauma patient who was transferred to the hospital or admitted. Responsible for the quality of data for all variables collected in the Trauma Registry. The TDSS will interact harmoniously with key information systems personnel at all hospital, regional, and state facilities to obtain, abstract, and enter the required data. The Trauma Data System Specialist enters the patient data in the trauma registry utilizing the computer, maintains the quality assurance program, and generates trauma reports as requested. The Data System Specialist oversees the daily trauma census. The Data System Specialist identifies and collates information needed for requested reports, and designs and implements database systems, monitors effectiveness of computer systems, provides education and training on systems changes, and prepares statistically valid reports.
Essential Job Functions
  • Ensures quality of trauma data for the national, state and regional trauma registries and trauma QI/Research and meets quarterly regional, state and national reporting deadlines and weekly trauma department reporting deadlines.
  • Abstracts data from trauma patient medical records and ensures that all data is entered in Registry format and downloaded appropriately via data transfer to the region and national registries.
  • Meets and monitors identified quotas for abstraction and data entry.
  • Provides administrative assistance to Trauma Program Manager and other members of the Trauma Program as required.
  • Performs data searches and prepares Registry reports as requested.
  • Ensures information system integration and seamless system functioning that allows flow of data between software applications.
  • Demonstrates behaviors consistent with Mission and Core Values (Human Dignity, Integrity, Compassion, Stewardship and Service) of Bon Secours Mercy Health.
  • Adheres to the standards and policies of the Corporate Responsibility Program, including the duty to comply with applicable laws and regulations, and reporting to designated Manager (or employer hotline) any suspected unethical, fraudulent, or unlawful acts or practices.
  • Embraces standards of behavior in order to provide and promote excellent customer service for both internal and external customers. Holds self and others accountable for behaviors that promote service excellence
  • Adheres to all standards and policies regarding safety/patient safety initiatives.
  • Performs and monitors data validation
  • Is responsible for all other duties as assigned.

Employment Qualifications
  • 2 Year/ Associates Degree, Health Information Management, Computer Science, or related field (required)
  • 4 year/ Bachelors Degree, Health Information Management, Computer Science, or related field (preferred)

Licensure/Certification Required:
  • Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) per AHIMA

Licensure/Certification Preferred:
  • Certified Specialist in Trauma Registries (CSTR)

Minimum Years and Type of Experience:
  • Two years computer experience in a health care setting required.
  • Demonstrated experience in data handling programs, MS Access, Word, Excel and Power Point.

Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills. Ambitious and able to work independently.

Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:
  • Knowledge in trauma registry methodology, case abstracting, data entry, ICD-10 coding, to type 60 wpm preferred and 1-2 years in medical records and information systems preferred.
  • High level of analytical ability required as incumbents must collect, analyze and interpret data to solve problems requiring a professional level of knowledge in a specific discipline and/or design relatively complex clinical or administrative systems and programs.
  • Detailed and goal oriented and able to meet deadlines.
