Description
The Kitchen Assistant helps to provide nutritious lunches to our Heritage guests and assists with Heritage events.
Essential Functions
  • This position is responsible for daily food prep of lunches for Heritage and for assisting with special events under the supervision of the executive chef.
  • Primary responsibilities include daily food preparation, lunch service and cleanliness for a kosher food site.
  • Helping cook and deliver kosher lunches to the Child Development Center
  • General kitchen cleaning, dishwashing and organization of kitchen tools and food inventory
  • Daily batch cooking, food preparation, grilling, baking as needed per our menu

Schedule
  • Part-time, usually less than 10 hours per week. A couple of weekday mornings per week. Some additional hours for special events will be required.

Requirements
  • Ability to follow directions
  • Able to batch cook, saute, fry, bake, grill and has knowledge of general food prep
  • Willing to learn to use basic kitchen equipment
  • Willing to learn basic food preparation skills for a kosher kitchen
  • Bring a creative approach and willingness to communicate new ideas, collaborate and share techniques for cooking in a kitchen with a small staff
  • Be responsible in running the kitchen and completing daily duties when the Executive chef is away
  • Help organize the storerooms and walk-ins so inventory is used and managed efficiently
  • Keep the kitchen environment clean following strict adherence to City of Overland Park and State of Kansas food codes
  • Ability to follow a recipe and multiply when needed
  • Ability to creatively improvise when necessary if menu items need to be subbed due to product shortage or delivery issues
  • Be ServSafe certified as a food handler (we will cover cost for online class & certification if you are not currently certified)

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand for at least duration of three to five hour shift
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds for short distances and regularly 25-50 pounds
  • Manual dexterity, frequent use of hands to handle, control, or feel objects, tools and controls
  • Constant bending stretching, twisting, reaching, and squatting to lift or move items
  • Environment could be hot, humid, or loud at times
