Our Communication Studies Department seeks to expand its part-time faculty pool to teach Communication courses.
  • Beyond the required education and experience, instructors must have a passion for what they teach and have teaching styles that support student success. Instructors are responsible for following Division and College procedures in support of teaching and learning.

Required Education:
Master's degree in speech, Communication Studies, or a related discipline from a regionally accredited institution with at least one course in Communication Theory.
Required Experience:
One (1) year of full-time teaching (or part-time equivalent) within the past five (5) years.
Licensure or Certification Requirements

Preferred Qualifications
Preferred Education
  • Twenty (20) semester or thirty (30) quarter graduate hours in the fields of Speech or Communication Studies.
  • Substantial coursework, specialization, or expertise in communications studies (e.g. interpersonal communication, organizational communication, rhetoric, etc.).

Preferred Experience
  • Experience teaching online courses in communications within the last three (3) years.
  • Community College teaching experience.

Position Purpose:
To teach a variety of communications courses as assigned. Participate in departmental and other professional activities on- and off-campus. Teach in a learning environment that puts students first. This may also include online courses.
Essential Functions:
Support student learning through activities that include:
  • Exhibit compliance with College policies and procedures, accountability for leave time, timesheet completion, release time, textbook ordering and related functions
  • Sustain currency in discipline and innovation in teaching
  • Collegial participation in faculty performance evaluation process
  • Maintain and post office hours in alignment with College expectations
  • Maintain physical campus presence for instruction and daily needs of students, departments, college, and community, as specified in the College Operations Policies and Procedures
  • Maintain requirements for student records, attendance, grades, and/or other documentation; ensure a safe, quality classroom or lab, including equipment, supplies, and inventory
  • Problem solve and manage sensitive information with appropriate awareness of FERPA standards; maintain confidentiality and sensitivity to the privacy needs of students
  • Other duties as assigned

Curriculum Delivery
  • Provide high-quality classroom instruction
  • Create course content, develop and revise course content and materials
  • Establish learning outcomes consistent with core ability outcomes, assess outcomes using appropriate assessment tools, and use assessment results to inform improvements at a program and course level
  • Incorporate college values into the curriculum and promote a respectful learning environment including facilitating awareness of multicultural and diversity issues in curricula
  • Teach and develop all class syllabi and course materials, in a form that can be directly delivered to, and used by, students
  • Confer with students on course materials
  • Deliver curriculum to students in traditional and online formats

Online Teaching and Student Support
  • Engage within the online course environment to ensure Regular and Substantive Interaction (RSI)
  • Monitor student progress and provide reasonable coaching and assistance to struggling students towards success
  • Review and grade all work submitted by students and provide timely and substantive feedback
  • Provide timely responses to student inquiries.
  • Ensure that all materials meet the guidelines of Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act
  • Use effective strategies for teaching online

Supervision Statement:
Faculty report to a department or division dean, and perform instruction-related duties and responsibilities in a timely manner and in accordance with the mission, policies, and procedures of the college.
Physical Demands/Working Environment:
This position works indoors and is exposed to usual office working conditions that includes office noises and interruptions, such as printers, telephones, and visitors. Position requires that an employee be able to sit or stand for extended periods of time; perform computer work in the form of word processing, data entry, spreadsheet work, and web-based research for more than seven (7) hours a day. Work involves concentrated mental and visual attention for sustained periods of time. Work may require transporting materials up to twenty-five (25) pounds. Work Safely.

  • An understanding of the theoretical elements of instructed second language learning among adults and the ability to implement appropriate pedagogy and create effective learning situations.
  • The ability to engage students in learning through a range of approaches and methods, understanding that community college students have diverse backgrounds, diverse literate orientations and academic preparation, and varying language skills and life experiences.
  • Knowledge of differences among learning styles and ability to adapt instruction and curriculum to address such differences.
  • An understanding of language testing and ability to assess proficiency at all levels, from entry to exit.
  • Ability to develop and work with assessment goals at the student, course and program levels.
