Part Time Coding Internships information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a Part Time Coding Internship, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Part Time Coding Internship, you typically need a basic understanding of programming languages such as Python, Java, or JavaScript, along with coursework or projects demonstrating your coding ability. Familiarity with version control systems like Git and development environments such as Visual Studio Code is often expected. Strong problem-solving skills, eagerness to learn, and effective communication help interns stand out and integrate well with teams. These skills and qualities enable interns to contribute meaningfully to projects, adapt quickly, and build a foundation for future software development roles.

What types of projects and responsibilities can I expect in a part-time coding internship?

In a part-time coding internship, you’ll typically work on real-world projects such as developing new features, fixing bugs, or assisting with testing and documentation. Your daily tasks may include writing and reviewing code, collaborating with team members via code repositories, and attending stand-up meetings. Interns often have the opportunity to learn from experienced developers and participate in code reviews, which helps build practical skills and understanding of industry best practices. The workload is usually structured to accommodate your part-time schedule, allowing you to balance work with other commitments.

What are part time coding internships?

Part time coding internships are temporary positions for students or aspiring programmers that allow them to gain practical experience in software development while working fewer hours than a full-time internship. These internships typically involve working on coding projects, learning new programming languages, and collaborating with experienced developers, all while accommodating academic schedules or other commitments. They are ideal for those seeking hands-on experience without the time demands of a full-time role, and they can often lead to future job opportunities or help build a professional portfolio.

You'll work alongside experienced software delivery personnel and mentors who will teach you how software is designed, built, and maintained through our ASF delivery model - all while learning valuable teamwork and problem-solving skills. Gain hands-on experience in software development and maintenance within an ASF product team, delivering releasable software in short sprint cycles for mission-critical border enforcement and homeland security management capabilities.
Collaborate closely with software developers, engineers, stakeholders, and end users to ensure the successful delivery of secure software solutions for mission critical applications. This is a chance to explore a career in technology and learn what it's like to work in software development - no college degree or prior IT work experience required.
Responsibilities:
  • Learn and become certified in our ASF delivery execution model
  • Learn how to utilize Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools and AI prompt engineering to support processes across our ASF delivery model
  • Learn how software is developed, tested and delivered through our ASF under the guidance of experienced personnel
  • Work as part of an ASF product team, supporting teammates and helping with tasks, including leveraging AI to help develop user stories from requirements, test cases, and creating user documentation or training materials
  • Participate in real project activities such as release planning meetings, sprint reviews, and software product demonstrations to see how teams iteratively build and improve software products together
  • Explore new technologies and automation tools are used in the software development and delivery process - including AI
  • Help improve existing software by testing features, identifying bugs, and suggesting ideas for improvement
  • Learn about software development, data, cybersecurity and systems architecture, and how they support the delivery of mission-critical systems
  • Develop professional and communication skills, learning how to share ideas, give feedback, and collaborate effectively in a technical environment

Qualifications:
Required
  • Must be a U.S. citizen and 18 years of age or older by July 3, 2026, due to federal security requirements
  • Must be able to pass a background investigation, including checks for felony convictions (3 years), recent illegal drug use (1 year), and misconduct such as theft or fraud (1 year) to obtain a government clearance
  • Currently enrolled in high school (senior year) and on track to graduate by June 2026
  • Strong interest in technology, problem solving, and software development - no prior job experience in the IT industry is required, but curiosity and motivation to learn are essential.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills - able to effectively ask questions, share ideas and collaborate with others both verbally and in writing
  • Familiarity with computers and logical thinking, whether from coursework (e.g., computer science, math, or robotics) or self-learning (e.g., online tutorials, coding clubs, or personal projects)
  • Willingness to learn programming fundamentals and tools used in modern software development

Desired
  • Exposure to leveraging AI technologies, including AI chat tools (like ChatGPT) and AI prompt engineering to return desired results
  • Exposure to any programming language (such as Python, JavaScript, or Java) or low code development platforms (such as Microsoft PowerApps)
  • Exposure to using any database tools, reporting platforms (such as Microsoft Power BI), or collaboration tools (such as Microsoft SharePoint)
