Description

OVERVIEW & PURPOSE:
Under limited supervision, performs semi-skilled and skilled work in the maintenance and repair of Iredell County's generators. Work involves performing installation, repair, and preventive maintenance on all the standby and portable generators. Employee reports to the Facility Maintenance Manager.
Examples of Duties
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Under occasional supervision, performs skilled work to ensure the effectiveness and efficiency of the emergency standby generators and transfer switches as well as portable generators required to maintain services in the county facilities during power interruptions. This position must exercise independent judgment and initiative in performing assigned duties. This position must also exercise tact and courtesy in contacts with Department Heads and building contacts. Reports to the Facility Services Skilled Trades Manager.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS:
Completes all preventative maintenance and troubleshoots Generators and Transfer switches at county facilities.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:
Data Conception: Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural or composite characteristics (whether similar or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people or things.
Interpersonal Communication: Requires the ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information. Includes giving instructions, assignments or directions to subordinates or assistants.
Language Ability: Requires the ability to read correspondence, reports, work orders, bid proposals, balance sheets, invoices, logs, diagrams, blueprints, schematics, etc. Requires the ability to prepare a variety of correspondence, reports, forms, budgets, diagrams, work orders, bid requests, etc., using prescribed formats and conforming to all rules of punctuation, grammar, diction, and style. Requires the ability to speak to groups of people with poise, voice control and confidence.
Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical of diagrammatic form; deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in a variety of technical or professional languages, including governmental accounting, electrical and mechanical terminology.
Numerical Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas; to add and subtract; multiply and divide; utilize decimals and percentages.
Form/Spatial Aptitude: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape.
Motor Coordination: Requires the ability coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using hand and power tools.
Manual Dexterity: Requires the ability to handle a variety of items such as hand and power tools. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
Color Discrimination: Requires the ability to differentiate between colors and shades of color.
Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress and when confronted with persons acting under stress.
Physical Communication: Requires the ability to talk and hear: (Talking: expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words. Hearing: perceiving nature of sounds by ear.) Must be able to communicate via telephone.
Quality of Work: Maintains high standards of accuracy in exercising duties and responsibilities. Exercises immediate remedial action to correct any quality deficiencies that occur in areas of responsibility.
Quantity of Work: Maintains effective and efficient output of all duties and responsibilities as described under "Specific Duties and Responsibilities."
Dependability: Assumes responsibility for doing assigned work and meeting deadlines. Completes assigned work on or before deadlines in accordance with directives, County policy, standards and prescribed procedures. Accepts accountability for meeting assigned responsibilities.
Typical Qualifications
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE "REQUIREMENTS":
Graduation from high school and 5 years of experience in generator installation and/or repair; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
ADDITIONAL "REQUIREMENTS":
Possession of a valid NC driver's license.
Familiarity with basic computer programs.
"PREFERRED" QUALIFICATIONS: NONE.
