What does a Part Time CAD Software Developer do?

A Part Time CAD Software Developer designs, develops, and maintains computer-aided design (CAD) software applications, typically working fewer hours per week than a full-time employee. Their responsibilities include writing and testing code, debugging software, collaborating with engineering teams, and implementing new features to improve the user experience. They may also customize CAD tools to meet specific industry or client needs. Working part time allows for flexible scheduling, which can be ideal for students, freelancers, or professionals seeking work-life balance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Part Time CAD Software Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part Time CAD Software Developer, you need strong programming skills (such as C++ or Python), experience with CAD software development, and a relevant degree in computer science or engineering. Familiarity with CAD platforms like AutoCAD or SolidWorks, code versioning tools, and possibly certifications in software development are typically required. Problem-solving ability, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills for collaborating on projects and understanding user needs. These skills ensure you can efficiently contribute high-quality code, meet project requirements, and support the development of reliable CAD applications.

What types of projects and collaboration can a part-time CAD software developer expect in a typical role?

As a part-time CAD software developer, you will typically work on specific modules or features within larger engineering or design projects, often focusing on tasks such as developing plugins, optimizing code for 3D modeling, or integrating new functionalities. You’ll collaborate closely with full-time developers, project managers, and sometimes end-users like engineers or architects to ensure your contributions fit seamlessly into the overall software ecosystem. Communication and clear documentation are important, especially since your hours may differ from others on the team. This structure allows you to engage in meaningful work while balancing other commitments, and it can offer exposure to advanced CAD technologies and potential full-time opportunities.

Job description

As a CAD Technician, you will play a key role in bringing infrastructure projects to life by providing high-quality technical drafting support across a diverse portfolio of municipal and transportation initiatives. Working closely with project managers, engineers, and design teams, you will help review and refine engineering drawing packages to ensure accuracy, compliance, and constructability.

In this role, you’ll contribute throughout the full project lifecycle, from early planning and conceptual layouts to preliminary and detailed design, as well as permitting documentation. You’ll have the opportunity to work on impactful projects that shape communities, applying your technical expertise to develop precise drawings, support design coordination, and streamline project delivery.

This position is ideal for someone who is detail-oriented, collaborative, and eager to grow their skills while contributing to meaningful infrastructure improvements.

  • Review construction plans, details, and figures for drafting and design.
  • Transform initial rough designs, sketches, and mark-ups into finished plan drawings.
  • Generate engineering drawings for initial and conclusive plan sets, collaborating closely with other drafters and engineers to ensure a coordinated design.
  • Assist in the preparation of technical documents and reports.

  • Relevant training in CAD, drafting, or design technology, including technical coursework, certifications, or equivalent real-world experience
  • Experience with transportation engineering, preferably TxDOT.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and Civil 3D (or similar design platforms such as MicroStation or OpenRoads), with experience in plan production, drafting standards, and collaboration tools used in municipal or transportation projects
