What's a good side hustle for an engineer?

A part time building engineer can consider side hustles such as consulting on building systems, offering maintenance or repair services, or providing energy efficiency assessments. These activities leverage technical skills and knowledge of building operations, often requiring certifications or licenses depending on the scope.

Can engineering be a part-time job?

Part-time building engineer positions are available in the facilities management industry, often involving scheduled shifts and basic maintenance tasks. These roles may require relevant certifications and can be suitable for individuals seeking flexible work arrangements. However, the availability of part-time engineering jobs varies by employer and location.

What does a Part Time Building Engineer do?

A Part Time Building Engineer is responsible for maintaining, repairing, and overseeing the mechanical, electrical, and structural systems within a building on a part-time basis. Their duties often include inspecting HVAC systems, performing routine maintenance, addressing repair requests, and ensuring that building operations comply with safety standards. They may also help with energy management and coordinate with other contractors or building staff as needed. Working part-time means their hours and responsibilities might vary depending on the needs of the property.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Part Time Building Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part Time Building Engineer, you need a solid understanding of building systems (HVAC, electrical, plumbing), basic repair skills, and typically a high school diploma or equivalent; additional technical training or certifications are often preferred. Familiarity with maintenance management systems, building automation controls, and relevant safety certifications (such as OSHA 10) is essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication with tenants and team members set top performers apart. These skills ensure efficient building operations, prompt issue resolution, and a safe, well-maintained environment.

What engineers make $300,000 a year?

Highly experienced engineers in specialized fields such as petroleum engineering, aerospace engineering, and certain senior software engineering roles can earn $300,000 or more annually. These positions often require advanced skills, certifications, and extensive industry experience, and may include bonuses or stock options that contribute to total compensation.

What is the difference between Part Time Building Engineer vs Part Time Maintenance Technician?

AspectPart Time Building EngineerPart Time Maintenance Technician
CertificationsBuilding operation licenses, HVAC, electrical, plumbing certificationsBasic electrical, plumbing, HVAC certifications
Work EnvironmentCommercial buildings, office complexes, residential propertiesCommercial and residential facilities, equipment rooms
Employer UsageProperty management firms, facilities management companiesProperty owners, facilities teams, maintenance service providers

Part Time Building Engineers typically hold certifications related to building systems and work in larger facilities managing multiple systems. Maintenance Technicians focus on specific repairs and routine maintenance, often with fewer certifications. Both roles are essential in property management but differ in scope and responsibilities.

What are some common challenges faced by part-time building engineers, and how can they effectively manage their workload?

Part-time building engineers often face the challenge of balancing maintenance tasks and urgent repairs within limited working hours. Efficient time management and clear communication with the full-time engineering team are essential to ensure that critical issues are addressed promptly and routine maintenance is scheduled appropriately. Utilizing detailed shift handover notes and staying updated on building management systems can also help part-time engineers stay aligned with ongoing projects and prevent gaps in service. Building strong relationships with property management and other maintenance staff can further streamline workflow and foster a supportive work environment.

What engineer makes $500,000 a year?

While most building engineers earn significantly less, some highly experienced or specialized engineers in senior management roles, such as facilities directors or chief engineers, can reach or exceed $500,000 annually, especially in large corporations or high-cost areas. Achieving this level often requires advanced certifications, extensive experience, and leadership responsibilities overseeing large teams or complex infrastructure.

Observability Engineer
The Opportunity:
Something breaks at 2 AM. Today, a human gets paged. Tomorrow, an AI agent detects the anomaly, correlates the root cause, triggers the remediation, and closes the ticket, all before the first cup of coffee. You are the engineer who builds that tomorrow.
We are seeking a senior Observability Engineer with expertise in both AI technologies and enterprise performance monitoring. This role combines hands-on engineering with AIOps implementation to deliver full-stack visibility across 250+ services. You will lead efforts to implement predictive monitoring and self-healing capabilities that drive down operational costs while increasing system availability by leveraging AI to triage and resolve incidents. You will mentor and supervise engineers, own technical quality, and push the program toward AI-driven observability with opportunities to build new observability platforms from the ground up as we expand into new environments. Due to the nature of work performed within this facility, U.S. citizenship is required.
Join us. The world can't wait.
You Have:
  • 5+ years of experience in enterprise observability, monitoring, and site reliability engineering
  • Experience architecting and operating Dynatrace for full-stack observability, including agent deployment, distributed tracing, log management, synthetic monitoring, and digital experience monitoring
  • Experience implementing AIOps workflows, including predictive alerting, anomaly detection, automated remediation, and incident automation
  • Experience building observability integrations, custom extensions, and infrastructure-as-code using Python, JavaScript, Node.js, and Terraform
  • Experience building operational and executive dashboards and implementing SLOs and SLAs
  • Experience working in Agile environments with sprint-based delivery
  • Knowledge of network monitoring protocols, including SNMP, SNMP traps, NetFlow, and Syslog
  • Ability to mentor engineers, conduct code reviews, and take accountability for technical delivery and quality
  • Bachelor's degree in a Computer Science or Information Technology field

Nice If You Have:
  • Experience with ServiceNow Event Management, including event rules, alert management rules, alert correlation, threshold tuning, noise reduction, CMDB integration with CI relationships and dependencies, ITOM alignment, automated incident creation, Flow Designer, IntegrationHub, JavaScript, Glide API, HTML or CSS, ServiceNow platform architecture, and developing standardized onboarding processes for integrating new monitoring tools into Event Management with governance, segregation of duties, and compliance documentation
  • Experience with advanced Dynatrace platform capabilities, including Grail, Smartscape, Davis AI, OpenPipeline, DQL, Workflow Automation, Platform API, AppSec, Session Replay, Grail-powered RUM, AI Observability, and Grail log management
  • Experience with Dynatrace Intelligence, including Dynatrace Assist, Intelligence Agents, MCP Server integration, and Dynatrace Apps development using the App Toolkit
  • Experience deploying and building observability platforms from scratch in government cloud environments such as AWS GovCloud, Azure Government, or IL4/IL5, including air-gapped, restricted network, and STIG-hardened deployments
  • Experience building self-service onboarding portals for application team observability adoption
  • Experience with open-source observability tooling, including OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, Grafana, and ELK/EFK
  • Experience with FinOps practices, containerization, and cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or GCP
  • Experience operating Splunk and Splunk Enterprise Security (SIEM), Cribl, and SolarWinds at enterprise scale
  • Dynatrace Professional or Master Certification or ServiceNow Certified Implementation Specialist - Event Management (CIS-EM) Certification
