About the Position
The City of Kennewick is seeking Seasonal Maintenance Workers to support operations in the following divisions:
  • Parks
  • Streets
  • Water Distribution/Utilities
These positions support the maintenance and care of City facilities, infrastructure, and public spaces throughout the season.
Work Schedules
  • Parks: Variable shifts including mornings, afternoons/evenings, weekdays and weekends
  • Streets/Water: Monday - Friday, morning/day shifts

Pay
  • Starting wage: $18.25 per hour
  • Returning seasonal employees may advance within the salary range based on the number of prior seasons worked

CLASSIFICATION SUMMARY
Under general supervision, a Maintenance Worker performs varied general maintenance and repair work in the Parks and Facilities or Public Works Departments. Work hours are varied and include evenings and weekends.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
A Seasonal Maintenance Worker performs a wide variety of basic tasks in the Parks or Public Works Departments, and may be temporarily assigned to other Departments within the City as required. Must possess the skills, knowledge and physical capabilities to perform the duties of the position and must comply with City and Department policies, procedures and methods at all times. Must demonstrate an ability to work independently with minimal direct supervision.
Examples of Work Performed (Illustrative Only)
Division Assignments & Duties:
Parks and FacilitiesPerforms routine tasks such as weeding, raking, watering, hand mowing, edging, shoveling, picking up litter, preparing softball infields and related grounds, and cleaning and repairing restrooms, grounds, buildings, and other public facilities. Performs routine upkeep and maintenance of City shops and facilities.
Plant Divisions
Performs routine tasks such as cleaning water/wastewater plants or pumping facilities, including janitorial work and other housekeeping duties such as organizing parts, painting, and cleaning equipment. Assists operators and other personnel in repairing equipment.
Utilities Divisions
Performs routine tasks such as cleaning, organizing parts, salvaging parts, and scraping out parts. Cleans and prepares water meters for rebuilding. Assists crews in maintenance programs such as valve turning, fire hydrant maintenance, and dead-end line flushing. Performs routine upkeep and maintenance of City shops and facilities.
Traffic Division
Repairs and maintains City streets by hand patching with asphalt, skin patching and crack sealing. Maintains drainage systems, performs lane line and crosswalk striping, burns weeds, and cleans debris from City right-of-ways. Uses various hand tools such as shovels, picks, etc. Performs routine upkeep and maintenance of City shops and facilities.
Signal Division
Assists City electricians/technicians in maintenance and repair of the City traffic signal and street lighting infrastructure. Sets up traffic control and lane closure, paints and cleans signal heads, pulls low-voltage wires through conduits, and helps move and lift heavy materials such as street light poles. Performs supervised work in and around a boom truck and aerial lift, and works at heights of up to thirty feet. Performs routine upkeep and maintenance of City shops and facilities.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be 18 years of age or older on the date of hire.
  • Must possess a high school diploma or GED.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid, unrestricted Washington State Driver's License.
  • Must possess and maintain an insurable driving record.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform outdoor maintenance work in all types of weather conditions; basic mechanical ability, including ability to use small hand tools; basic safety skills and awareness; prior experience in maintenance or similar work preferred.
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends and varied shifts as required.

This position is not subject to health benefits, but this position is eligible participate in the Washington State Retirement System (PERS) and the Washington State Paid Sick Leave accruing 1 hour for every 40 hours worked. Also, eligible for holiday pay at a pro-rated basis.
