Job description

The Stationary Engineer is responsible for performing routine maintenance and repairs to the Medical Center's HVAC systems, including associated mechanical equipment and utilities. He/she ensures the uninterrupted, efficient and safe operation of all boilers, heating, air conditioning, ventilation systems, and all mechanical equipment and allied facilities.
Position available: Part time, 3pm-11:30pm with rotating weekends and holidays
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Performs service and repair of hot water boilers, high and low pressure steam boilers and all other types of pressure vessels. Initiates repairs to high pressure steam boilers and other pressure vessels and returns equipment to service keeping down time to a minimum.
2. Performs service and repair of heating, air conditioning and ventilation systems. Performs scheduled preventive maintenance duties on boilers, pumps, motors, and air handlers and other equipment, cleaning, lubricating and calibrating as required. Checks to insure proper operation of all controls, dampers, etc.
3. Displays a working comprehension of various control systems, mechanical equipment, and ventilation systems. Services and repairs or replaces equipment such as motors, pumps and pump seals, bearings, fan and blowers and other mechanical equipment.
4. Takes initiative to adjust equipment (building changeover) and temperature settings when and if necessary depending on outdoor conditions.
5. Displays appropriate level of electrical knowledge and skills needed for position. Ability to troubleshoot electrical problems within control circuits, cords, ballasts, kitchen equipment, etc. Has sufficient knowledge of single and three phase wiring applications.
6. Conducts and logs daily equipment rounds in order to assure operation. Immediately initiates repairs to equipment found to be malfunctioning or out of normal operating parameters.
7. Performs general plumbing repairs. Maintain, repair, and make alterations to steam, gas, water, air, and sanitary piping. Repair leaks and clear drain stoppages.
8. Performs and maintains responsibility for building utilities such as electrical distribution, plumbing risers, fire suppression, and emergency power systems.
9. Responds to general service requests (shop calls) by determining probable cause and initiates corrective measures as appropriate.
10. Performs and maintains cleaning of the condenser coils and air handling equipment. Cleans and de-scales steam boilers. Dismantles and breaks down boilers for inspection.

Education and/or Experience
  • High School diploma or equivalent from an accredited program required
  • 1-3 years of experience required.
  • Previous experience as a Stationary Engineer preferably in hospital setting
  • Training and coordination sufficient to handle various tools and equipment
  • Must have City of Chicago Stationary Engineer's License.
