Job description

The Gallup Indian Medical Center Biomedical Engineering Team has the responsibility to provide resident, scientific, technical, and engineering expertise to meet the biomedical engineering needs to provide direct patient care support to repair, coordinate, provide installation, consultation, training, and solutions to complex and unique instrumentation system problems to ensure program compliance.

A REAL ID will be required beginning May 7, 2025, in accordance with 6 C.F.R. 37.5 (2021).

Qualifications:

IHS Selectees whose duties and responsibilities require them to work permanently, temporarily, or occasionally in an IHS healthcare facility must comply with the IHS Employee Immunization Policy related to vaccine-preventable diseases, consistent with recommendations for healthcare workers. Individual Occupational Requirements
Education:
Undergraduate Education: Major study -- any field of study in an accredited college or university.

Graduate Education:Major study -- fields related to the position to be filled.

Experience: Specialized Experience (for positions above GS-5): Examples of qualifying specialized experience include:

  • Working as a skilled mechanic or maintenance worker, sales or service engineer, or planner or estimator in a technical group dealing with manufacture, utilization, repair, or operation of equipment.
  • Reviewing and applying technical specifications and requirements.
  • Analyzing equipment and forecasting spare parts requirements.
  • Reading and interpreting engineering change orders, equipment requisitions, shop orders, and work orders.
  • Analyzing contract specifications and examining pertinent equipment to determine if specifications are met.
  • Analyzing or supervising maintenance, repair, or production operations to determine methods of improvement.

In addition to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
GS-07: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Experience performing preventive maintenance, inspections, functional testing, troubleshooting, calibration, and basic repair of biomedical equipment used in a healthcare environment. Experience following manufacturer service manuals, documenting maintenance activities, using electronic test equipment, and maintaining equipment records while working under the guidance of senior biomedical staff.
GS-09: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Experience independently performing preventive maintenance, calibration, troubleshooting, repair, installation, and acceptance testing of a variety of biomedical equipment. Experience interpreting technical manuals, electrical schematics, and manufacturer specifications; utilizing diagnostic and electronic test equipment; documenting maintenance activities in a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS); ensuring compliance with Joint Commission, CMS, FDA, NFPA, and applicable IHS standards; and providing technical support to clinical staff.
GS-11: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Experience independently inspecting, troubleshooting, repairing, calibrating, testing, installing, and maintaining a wide variety of biomedical equipment used in patient care. Experience evaluating equipment performance; interpreting technical manuals, engineering drawings, and manufacturer specifications; performing acceptance inspections and safety testing; maintaining accurate documentation within a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS); ensuring compliance with Joint Commission, CMS, FDA, NFPA, and applicable IHS standards; prioritizing workload across multiple clinical departments; providing technical consultation and training to clinical staff; participating in equipment planning, replacement, and lifecycle management; and serving as a technical resource for complex biomedical systems. Experience supporting critical patient care equipment in Emergency, Intensive Care, Surgical Services, Sterile Processing, Radiology, Laboratory, Dental, and outpatient clinical areas.
Time In Grade
Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).
