The City of Stockton's Community Services Department Recreation Division is currently accepting applications for ADULT/YOUTH SPORTS OFFICIAL (Seasonal/Part-Time).
The Adult Sports Officials work as softball umpires and basketball officials.
The Youth Sports Officials work as basketball, soccer, volleyball, and flag football officials for the City of Stockton's Sports Program. Youth Sports Officials initiate game play, make game play decisions with arm signals and verbal announcements, impose penalties for rule violations, control the play by whistle and/or signal, and check scores.
Under general supervision, acts as referee, games official, or umpire in Adult or Youth Sports Leagues and Tournament games utilizing current rules and regulations applying to particular sports.
All locations in Stockton are as follows:

  • McNair Softball Complex, 9550 Ronald E McNair Way
  • Oak Park, 3514 N Sutter Street

POSITION HOURS:
Program hours are weekday evenings and Saturdays. Mandatory meetings will be held twice monthly.
Prior to appointment, this position requires all eligible candidates to submit to and successfully pass a California Department of Justice fingerprint clearance if 18 years of age or older in accordance with State law for all public recreation employees and volunteers who have direct contact with minors (i.e., those under 18 years); and a urine drug screen as a requirement of employment if 18 years of age or older (the City of Stockton will pay all fingerprinting and drug screen test costs).
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
Adult and Youth Sports Officials are responsible for refereeing or officiating at competitive sports events. Incumbents must possess a high level of knowledge of the rules and regulations assigned to particular sports and work without direct technical supervision.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES (Illustrative Only)
  • Officiates at City sports and athletic events.
  • Determines methods of play and interprets and enforces game rules.
  • Maintains knowledge of recreation and sports event rules and regulations.
  • Maintains order and enforces safety procedures for both participants and spectators during sporting events.
  • Ensures that game courts, fields, and equipment are in proper and safe playing condition.

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Requirements:
  • Must submit one set of fingerprints to the California Department of Justice if 18 years of age or older in accordance with State law for all public recreation employees and volunteers who have direct contact with minors (i.e., those under 18 years); and
  • Must submit to a urine drug screen as a requirement of employment if 18 years of age or older.
Knowledge of:
  • Scoring techniques in seasonal sports;
  • Officiating techniques and methods of refereeing disputes;
  • Basic arithmetic principles and practices;
  • Methods of scorekeeping; and
  • Game rules in a variety of sports, such as basketball, softball, volleyball, and football.
