General Description and Qualifications
If you're at least 16 years of age, are a sports enthusiast, and want to spend the warmer months working outdoors, apply to join our dynamic Parks Maintenance Team that keeps Grove City athletics running smoothly and our fields looking beautiful.
The Sports and Field Maintenance Assistant, under the immediate supervision of a Department Supervisor or Crew Leader, is responsible for performing general manual labor and maintenance work at City owned parks and facilities. Primary duties include baseball and softball field prep, turf care, facility upkeep, game support and pickleball, tennis, and basketball court upkeep.
The successful candidate will work to perform a variety of maintenance and repair tasks using hand tools and various types of motorized equipment, will work outdoors in all weather conditions, and meets the requirements outlined below.
- Must be at least 16 years of age.
- Must demonstrate reliable and predictable attendance.
- Must possess a valid Ohio driver's license and remain insurable under the City's vehicle insurance policy.

Available Positions:
Sunday through Thursday
OR Tuesday through Saturday - 40 hours per week
Weekday hours: 7:00 am - 4:00 pm
Weekend hours: 6:00 am to 2:00 pm
OR 2:00 pm to 10:00 pm; must be able to work AM or PM shift depending on the duration of a special event or tournament schedule
This is a seasonal position scheduled 40 hours per week for up to 5.5 consecutive months.
Essential Functions of the Position
The Sports and Field Maintenance Assistant shall have the following duties under their direct supervisor:
Baseball & Softball Field Support - Assist in preparing fields for games and practices by:
- Dragging and raking infields
- Watering infield dirt and turf as directed
- Setting up bases, pitching rubbers, and field equipment
- Lining fields with chalk or paint for foul lines and batter's boxes
- Help maintain pitcher's mound and batter's boxes by adding clay and tamping as needed
- Synthetic turf field grooming/ maintenance
General Grounds Maintenance:
- Mow and trim grass areas, including infields/outfields, foul territory, and park grounds
- Remove litter and debris from fields, dugouts, and spectator areas
- Assist with edging, mulching, and basic landscaping tasks
- Report any field damage, hazards, or maintenance needs to full-time employees
- Trash removal and custodial tasks for park restrooms and pavilions/shelters
Equipment Use & Safety:
- Operate small power equipment (e.g., line chalkers, blowers, push mowers) safely and responsibly
- Clean and store tools and equipment after use
- Follow safety procedures and wear appropriate protective gear
- May drive a pick-up truck, van, golf cart, or riding mower in support of regular duties.
Team Support & Flexibility:
- Work under the direction of full-time crew leader or supervisors
- Assist during special events or tournaments with field setup and teardown
- Perform other general park maintenance tasks as needed
General:
- Supports Park Maintenance department by successfully executing daily job assignments.
- Performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled tasks to assist with the efficient delivery of City services (e.g., litter cleanup, mowing, edging, etc.); assists with maintenance and operation of City-owned equipment and vehicles; inspects equipment and tools prior to operation to ensure safety; maintains City tools and equipment as required; cleans City facilities.
- Meets all job safety requirements and all applicable OSHA safety standards that pertain to essential functions.
- Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance.
- Obeys and promptly executes all orders of the Administrative Assistant.
Working Conditions and Equipment Operated
The employee has exposure to chemical compounds found in an office environment (e.g., toner, correction fluid, etc.); works in the vicinity of floor or wall openings, elevated platforms, and/or runways; ascends and/or descends ladders, stairs, or scaffolds; works on and around powered platforms and/or vehicle mounted platforms; is exposed to environmental conditions which may result in injury from fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, and/or poorly ventilated work areas; exposed to possible injury from hazardous gases, chemicals, flammables, air contaminants, unclean or unsanitary conditions; works with moving mechanical parts of equipment or machines (e.g., belts, reels, blades, pulleys, etc.); exposed to possible injury from explosions and/or falling from high places; has exposure to fire; has exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy weather conditions; has exposure to shaking objects or surfaces; regularly required to lift, carry, push, or pull 50 lbs. or less. Employee may be subject to irregular work hours and must have flexible availability; and is exposed to vehicular traffic when working in the public right-of-way.
Note: In accordance with the U.S. Department of Labor physical demands strength ratings, this is considered medium to heavy work.
