What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part time barback?

To thrive as a Part Time Barback, you need strong organizational skills, physical stamina, and basic knowledge of bar operations, with most positions requiring a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with POS systems, bar cleaning equipment, and inventory management tools is beneficial. Excellent teamwork, communication, and a proactive attitude help barbacks support bartenders and maintain smooth service. These skills and qualities ensure efficient bar operations, high customer satisfaction, and a positive work environment.

What are some common challenges that part time barbacks face during busy shifts, and how can they effectively manage them?

Part-time barbacks often encounter challenges such as keeping up with high demand during peak hours, restocking supplies quickly, and supporting bartenders while maintaining a clean and organized workspace. Effective time management and clear communication with bartenders and other staff are key to handling these pressures. Staying proactive—such as anticipating supply needs and learning the bar's layout—can help barbacks stay ahead during rush periods and contribute to a smooth, efficient work environment.

What is a part time barback?

Part time barbacks are support staff in bars or restaurants who assist bartenders by restocking supplies, cleaning, and maintaining the bar area, but work fewer hours than full-time employees. Their responsibilities often include replenishing ice, glassware, and garnishes, collecting empty glasses, and ensuring the bar runs smoothly during busy shifts. Part time barbacks typically work evenings, weekends, or special events, making the role ideal for those seeking flexible or supplemental work. This position can also serve as a stepping stone for advancing to a bartender role. Good communication skills, physical stamina, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment are important for this job.

Description

LEHRHAUS SERVER/BARTENDER

Lehrhaus: A Jewish Tavern & House of Learning featuring creative takes on food from around the Jewish world is looking for a fun & outgoing server/bartender to join their team. Named one of the 50 best new restaurants in the country of 2023, Lehrhaus is a project unlike any other and one of the hottest additions to the Boston restaurant community.

Lehrhaus operates a unique service model in which all front of house staff share responsibilities and work each aspect of service from serving and bartending to food-running. Our hospitality-driven tavern service encourages interaction and story telling while also creating a streamlined experience for both our guests and staff.

The beverage program is the brain-child of award winning bar manager Naomi Levy (Eastern Standard, Maccabee Bar, and more), with cocktails ranging across continents, exploring the dynamic flavors of the Jewish diaspora. The food menu is similarly a wide representation of what Jewish food has come to encompass today.

We encourage all backgrounds to apply. The ideal candidate will have at least one year of restaurant experience and a passion for hospitality. Bartending experience is preferred, however we are happy to train the right person who is looking to take the next step in their career. Sunday availability is a must.

WHY WORK AT LEHRHAUS

Our hybrid not-for-profit model allows us to offer a great collaborative workplace. We want to build a better, gentler, more sustainable, and inclusive version of the restaurant industry. We offer manageable hours, competitive wages, great benefits, and room to advance.

MORE ABOUT LEHRHAUS

The world's first Jewish Tavern and House of Learning, Lehrhaus is an entirely new kind of gathering space: a welcoming, stylish, smart, sociable neighborhood watering hole that brings people together. We're dedicated to sharing Jewish culture through the wide ranging flavors of the diaspora, culinary storytelling, and welcoming hospitality. Books, texts, and classes are available to anyone interested in diving deeper into the traditional Jewish practice of text study. Lehrhaus is a space for people of all backgrounds to experience Judaism through food & drink, ancient texts, poetry, literature, lively conversation, and more.
