Job description

Copper Island Academy is seeking a Part-Time Band Instructor to join our outstanding educational team.

Organization Overview

Copper Island Academy, located in the picturesque Keweenaw Peninsula of Michigan, is a public school academy committed to preparing all students for college, work, and life success. We embrace a unique blend of highly effective Finnish education practices with traditional American ideals, fostering an environment that nurtures lifelong skill development.

Position Overview

We are seeking a passionate Band Instructor to join our innovative team, teaching students in grades 5-11. The ideal candidate will inspire students through hands-on musical instruction, build a strong foundation in ensemble performance, and foster a lifelong appreciation for music.

Schedule

Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8:45 a.m. - 10:45 a.m., Fridays, 8:45 a.m. - 9:45 a.m.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Teaching certificate or ability to obtain one
  • Experience working with youth across a range of grade levels (5-10 preferred)
  • Background in instrumental music instruction and ensemble direction
  • Proven ability to engage with families and community stakeholders
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and mentorship skills
  • Passion for creating a hands-on, joy-filled learning environment

Duties

Band Instruction

  • Develop and deliver engaging lessons for students in grades 5-10, introducing foundational music concepts and progressing to more advanced instrumental skills
  • Teach core competencies such as music theory, instrument technique, tone production, and ensemble listening
  • Align instruction with curriculum goals and Finnish education principles, emphasizing experiential, student-centered learning
  • Foster a growth mindset, encouraging students to embrace challenges and build confidence through practice and performance

Community Engagement

  • Coordinate student performances at school events and community gatherings
  • Build connections with families to support student participation and practice at home
  • Engage the community in celebrating student musical growth and achievement

Rehearsal and Performance Learning

  • Lead rehearsals that build ensemble skills, including timing, balance, and blend
  • Prepare students for school concerts and public performances
  • Create opportunities for students to reflect on their progress and set individual goals

Assessment and Feedback

  • Use developmentally appropriate assessments to track student growth in technical and ensemble skills
  • Provide timely, constructive feedback to support continuous improvement and confidence-building
