What is a part time assistant?

Part time assistants are employees who provide support to an organization or individual for fewer hours than a standard full-time schedule, typically working less than 35-40 hours per week. Their duties vary depending on the employer and can include administrative tasks, scheduling, data entry, and other support functions. Part time assistants are valued for their flexibility and ability to help teams manage workloads without the commitment of a full-time hire.

What are part-time assistant jobs?

As a part-time assistant, you may serve as customers’ first point of contact by performing receptionist and administrative duties in an office. In other roles, you may provide clerical support for managers and executives, fulfilling duties that range from taking notes during calls and meetings to arranging travel itineraries. You organize paperwork, answer phones and emails, and sort and distribute correspondence. You also assist management with staffing, scheduling, and maintaining operational records like employment files. In some roles, your responsibilities also include financial activities, such as performing bank deposit reconciliation and processing vendor payments. In general, you work to create an orderly and efficient work environment and support busy leaders in achieving their business goals and priorities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part time assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part Time Assistant, you generally need strong organizational abilities, time management skills, and a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with office software like Microsoft Office Suite, email systems, and sometimes scheduling tools is commonly required. Excellent communication, reliability, and a proactive attitude help individuals excel in supporting teams and managing multiple tasks. These competencies ensure smooth daily operations and enable efficient support in dynamic work environments.

What are some common challenges faced by part-time assistants, and how can they be managed effectively?

Part-time assistants often juggle multiple tasks within limited working hours, which can make prioritizing responsibilities a challenge. Communication is key—regular check-ins with supervisors and team members help ensure clarity on urgent tasks and expectations. Additionally, adapting quickly to different assignments and maintaining organizational skills are crucial for managing workload effectively. By staying proactive and open to feedback, part-time assistants can overcome these challenges and contribute positively to their teams.

Approximately half of the position will focus on supporting our son when he is not working or needs additional assistance. He typically works Monday–Friday during the day when he is feeling well. The other half will involve general household and familial support.

Companionship & Support

  • Provide companionship, conversation, and social engagement
  • Take walks and occasional community outings
  • Provide transportation to activities and appointments
  • Watch movies or sports, listen to music, and spend time together
  • Provide light structure, encouragement, and supervision
  • Help with everyday routines and tasks
  • Occasionally prepare a simple meal

Family Assistant Tasks

When our son is working or otherwise does not need assistance, the other portion of the position will involve occasional light household and family-assistant tasks, such as:

  • Running laundry and putting it away
  • Light organizing
  • Answering the door
  • Mailing packages, errands
  • Helping with simple household tasks
  • Occasionally walking the family dog
  • Occasionally helping coordinate a veterinary or grooming appointment

There is no heavy housekeeping or cleaning involved. The family already has a weekly cleaning service.

About Our Household

We are a three-person household with a small dog. We’re looking for someone who will become a trusted and dependable part of our family’s support system.

Our son enjoys being active and engaged and especially appreciates people who are friendly, positive, patient, and socially aware.

You May Be a Great Fit If You Are:
  • Warm, friendly, and genuinely enjoy connecting with others
  • Reliable, dependable, and organized
  • Comfortable taking initiative and communicating with the family
  • Patient and socially aware
  • Comfortable driving and getting out into the community
  • Comfortable interacting with and occasionally caring for a small dog
  • Interested in music, movies, sports, art, walking, or similar activities
Requirements
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record
  • Reliable transportation
  • Comfortable providing transportation (using the family car) for our son
  • Background check required
  • Strong communication skills and reliability
  • Ability to work independently and take appropriate initiative
