What is a part time AS400 job?

A Part Time AS400 job involves working with IBM's AS400 (IBM i) system on a part-time basis. Responsibilities may include system administration, programming, maintenance, and troubleshooting for businesses that rely on AS400 for their operations. These roles are often found in industries like manufacturing, finance, and healthcare. Part-time AS400 professionals typically work flexible hours, providing support and development as needed.

What are the typical work responsibilities for a part time AS400 professional?

As a Part Time AS400 professional, your primary responsibilities may include maintaining and monitoring AS400 system performance, performing regular backups, managing user accounts, running batch processes, and assisting with minor programming tasks or troubleshooting. You'll often coordinate with IT teams or end users to resolve issues and ensure business applications are running smoothly. Depending on the employer, you may also be involved in system upgrades or supporting software integration projects. Part time schedules are common in businesses with legacy AS400 applications that require steady support but not a full-time presence.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the part time AS400 position, and why are they important?

To excel as a Part Time AS400 professional, you need solid experience with IBM AS400 (iSeries) systems, RPG programming, and basic system administration, often supported by relevant IT certifications or technical training. Familiarity with related tools such as CL, DB2/400, and job scheduling software is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help individuals succeed in this role. These competencies ensure the reliable maintenance and support of AS400 environments, enabling smooth business operations and effective teamwork.
