Job description

Summary:

Mark Arts is seeking two part-time Art Instructors to teach 2-D classes, in both drawing and painting. The Art Instructor plans and leads instruction in Watercolor at Mark Arts.  Our ideal candidate is creative, industrious, cooperative, capable of taking direction, knowledgeable about art history, different art genres and has demonstrated technical abilities.  Instructor must be skilled in providing instruction to guide students in creating unique works of art and improving technical skills. We have opportunities for candidates to provide instruction for weekly classes, workshops, and private parties, as needed.

Essential Functions:

  • Teach classes in Watercolor.
  • Designs the course and writes course descriptions.
  • Develops and submits a class syllabus and supplies list.
  • Demonstrates and facilitates techniques in an effective and understandable manner to adult groups of up to 14 students. Private parties may include up to 16 or more. 
  • Provides guidance and support to students at all skill levels. 
  • Promotes a safe and positive classroom environment.
  • Communicates with education department on class programming ideas and supplies needed.
  • Prepares materials and cleans up after classes, workshops, or private parties (if applicable).
  • Represents Mark Arts in the community and may be involved in community outreach programming.
  • Carries out additional job-related duties as may be directed by immediate supervisor.

  • Knowledge - considerable technical knowledge of the subject or activity to be taught.
  • Instructional delivery - ability to teach students who have a wide variety of experience and aptitude in a welcoming environment.
  • Classroom management - ability to develop a class plan and to organize and conduct classes according to the plan. Commitment to fostering student growth.
  • Communication proficiency - ability to communicate clearly and effectively, orally and in writing, and/or by whatever creative means are necessary to cross communication barriers.
  • Collaboration skills - ability to maintain effective working relationships with staff, students, and the public.
  • Dependable/reliable - committed to teaching class according to the designated class schedule; reports to work on-time for every class.
  • Self-motivated - motivated to do or achieve something because of one's own enthusiasm or interest, without needing pressure from others.

This job operates in an indoor classroom setting.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk, hear, speak, walk, stand and sit throughout the shift.
  • This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching and climbing all day. The employee must frequently lift and/or move objects up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move objects up to 25 pounds.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work:

This is a part-time position. Days and hours of work may vary, but is primarily weekdays, weeknights, and Saturdays.

Skills & Abilities Required:

  • Experience with teaching various artistic techniques and methods to various skill levels.
  • Ability to independently develop and facilitate instructional strategies that allow students to express themselves through art.

Education/ Experience Required:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • 1-4 years of experience leading art classes.
  • Experience leading art education programs.
