Facilities Maintenance Technician

Reports to: Senior Manager of Facilities 

Pay Rate: $26/hr

Position Summary: At Great Plains SPCA, every role contributes to improving the lives of homeless animals. The Facilities Maintenance Technician plays a critical role in maintaining a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for staff, volunteers, visitors, and the animals in our care. Reporting to the Senior Manager of Facilities, this position performs preventative maintenance, repairs, groundskeeping, equipment upkeep, and facility improvement projects to ensure the shelter remains safe, functional, and fully operational.

The ideal candidate is dependable, self-motivated, and mechanically inclined, with strong troubleshooting skills and a proactive approach to problem-solving. They take pride in maintaining high facility standards, enjoy hands-on work in a fast-paced environment, and are committed to supporting Great Plains SPCA's mission of creating positive outcomes for animals and the people who care for them.


Key Responsibilities

  • Perform preventative maintenance, repairs, and facility improvements for buildings, grounds, equipment, and systems. 
  • Respond to maintenance requests, complete work orders, and identify safety or maintenance concerns through routine inspections. 
  • Assist with plumbing, electrical, HVAC, carpentry, painting, and other general maintenance projects. 
  • Maintain tools, equipment, vehicles, and inventory of maintenance supplies. 
  • Coordinate with vendors and support facility improvement projects and renovations. 
  • Support building security systems, and respond to facility emergencies as needed. 
  • Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas. 
  • Provide day-to-day support to the Part-Time Cleaner. 
  • Assist with other facility and shelter operations as needed and promptly communicate maintenance or safety concerns.
  • Participate in all shelter duties as assigned, including daily animal handling, while embracing the organization's mission and commitment to compassionate care.
  • Comply with all Great Plains SPCA safety policies and procedures. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Experience Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required. 
  • At least 1-2 years of hands-on maintenance, facilities, construction, or related experience preferred, with the ability to troubleshoot and complete a variety of repair projects independently
  • Working knowledge of facility systems, including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and general building maintenance.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record and proof of insurance. 
  • Ability to safely operate hand tools, power tools, ladders, and maintenance equipment. 
  • Ability to organize work, prioritize competing tasks, and work independently with minimal supervision

Work Conditions

  • Schedule: Monday through Friday 8-5 or 9-6 during initial training. Schedule may include one weekend day in the future. 
  • Work hours may vary based on organizational needs and emergency situations. 
  • Must be comfortable working around dogs and cats of all sizes, ages, and temperaments. 
  • Regularly perform physical tasks such as standing, walking, bending, kneeling, climbing, reaching, lifting, and carrying to support facility maintenance and operations in both indoor and outdoor environments
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and team lift up to 100 pounds.
  • Ability to remain calm and professional in stressful situations. 
  • Potential exposure to loud noise, cleaning chemicals, zoonotic diseases, and occasionally fractious animals.
