Job description

Axiom is seeking a part-time (250 hours/year), remote Graphic Designer to provide illustration services to help communicate scientific findings. This includes the development of graphical abstracts to support manuscripts, conceptual illustrations to convey island seafood value chains and other complex socioeconomic themes and concepts, and layout support for one-pagers/tri-fold brochures and other similar NOAA Fisheries publications for the Pacific Islands Region.

Duties include:Development of conceptual designs, illustrations, and figures to support scientific research advancing social science themes across the Pacific Islands Region.

  • Producing conceptual designs, illustrations, and figures that are suitable for publishing in scientific literature, and public press. Most efforts will be related to economic, social, cultural, and indigenous values and concepts for island marine ecosystems and associated fauna, seascapes, and landscapes.
  • Work with Project Lead to translate complex scientific data and information to create infographics, illustrations, and layouts for publications, reports, presentations, outreach materials, and program communications with an emphasis on economic, social, cultural, and indigenous values and concepts for tropical marine ecosystems and associated fauna, seascapes, and landscapes.
  • Layout and design documents intended for publication as reports, blogs, websites, and social media.
  • Provide timely and regular draft graphics to the project lead to allow for feedback and iterative changes and modifications to the product (e.g.., graphics, conceptual designs, illustrations, etc.)
  • Provide final products in appropriate formats (e.g., pdf, png, jpg, etc.) including any native source files.
  • Provide monthly progress report to include, but not necessarily be limited to, the following: accomplishments, issues encountered, travel (including purpose, significant outcomes, action items), and recommendations, if applicable.

Qualifications

  • Advanced knowledge in the use of Adobe Creative Suite, and in particular, Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign.
  • Experience with layout and design of documents for publications, websites, blogs, and social media.
  • Experience creating digital products used in communications and outreach dissemination through print and online mediums.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Four or more years of experience creating illustrations, graphics, and figures for the purposes of communicating scientific information.
