How much do part time air ambulance pilot jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 11, 2026, the average yearly pay for part time air ambulance pilot in the United States is $130,916.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $100,000.00 and $155,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part time air ambulance pilot?

To excel as a Part Time Air Ambulance Pilot, you need a commercial pilot's license, significant flight hours (often 1,500+), and specialized training in aeromedical operations. Familiarity with aircraft-specific avionics, navigation systems, and emergency medical protocols is typically required, along with certifications such as an instrument rating. Strong decision-making, stress management, and effective communication are essential soft skills for managing high-pressure situations and collaborating with medical teams. These qualifications are crucial to ensure patient safety, timely response, and successful coordination during critical medical transport missions.

What is the difference between Part Time Air Ambulance Pilot vs Part Time Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Pilot?

AspectPart Time Air Ambulance PilotPart Time Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Pilot
CredentialsCommercial Pilot License, rotorcraft or fixed-wing ratings, medical certificationCommercial Pilot License, rotorcraft or fixed-wing ratings, medical certification
Work EnvironmentHelicopters or fixed-wing aircraft transporting patients to medical facilitiesAmbulance aircraft or helicopters providing emergency medical transport
Employer & IndustryAir ambulance companies, hospitals, medical transport servicesEMS agencies, air ambulance services, emergency response providers

Both roles require similar pilot certifications and involve flying aircraft for medical transport. However, Part Time Air Ambulance Pilots typically operate in specialized air ambulance services transporting critically ill patients, while Part Time EMS Pilots focus on emergency medical flights within broader EMS operations. The main difference lies in the scope of services and the specific medical transport environment.

What are the typical scheduling and availability requirements for a part time air ambulance pilot?

Part-time Air Ambulance Pilots often work on an on-call or rotating shift basis, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays, depending on the service's coverage needs. Flexibility and the ability to respond to urgent calls are essential, as missions can arise at any time. Part-time pilots typically coordinate closely with dispatchers, medical crews, and other pilots to ensure seamless coverage and safe handovers between shifts. While the schedule can be unpredictable, many organizations provide pilots with advance notice of their shifts or on-call periods.

What is a part time air ambulance pilot?

Part time air ambulance pilots are trained aviation professionals who operate aircraft, such as helicopters or fixed-wing planes, to transport critically ill or injured patients to medical facilities on a part-time or as-needed basis. They work for air ambulance services and may be scheduled for specific shifts or called in during emergencies. These pilots must have specialized training in medical transport, in addition to their standard pilot certifications, and often work closely with medical teams during flights. The part-time nature of the role allows for flexibility, but it also requires readiness and availability during assigned hours. Safety, quick decision-making, and effective communication are essential skills for this position.
