What is a part time advisor?

A Part Time Advisor is a professional who provides guidance or support to clients, students, or employees on a part-time basis, typically working fewer hours than a full-time role. Their responsibilities can include offering expert advice, assisting with decision-making, or helping individuals achieve specific goals. Part Time Advisors may work in a variety of fields such as education, finance, retail, or career counseling, and their schedules are often flexible to accommodate both the advisor and the clients' needs. This role is ideal for individuals seeking work-life balance or supplementary income while still sharing their expertise.

What are some common challenges part-time advisors face when balancing multiple responsibilities?

Part-time advisors often need to juggle advising duties with other personal or professional commitments, which can sometimes make scheduling and time management challenging. Since they may not be on-site every day, effective communication with students and colleagues is essential to stay updated and provide consistent support. Additionally, part-time advisors might need to quickly adapt to varying student needs within limited hours, requiring strong organizational skills and flexibility. However, many institutions provide resources and collaborative tools to help advisors stay connected and efficient.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part time advisor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part Time Advisor, you typically need strong interpersonal skills, problem-solving abilities, and relevant educational or industry knowledge. Familiarity with customer relationship management (CRM) systems and basic office software is often required, and some roles may prefer certifications related to advising or counseling. Excellent communication, active listening, and adaptability are standout soft skills for building rapport and effectively supporting clients or students. These skills and qualities are crucial for providing personalized guidance, fostering trust, and ensuring consistent, high-quality service in a flexible, part-time capacity.

Job description

Advising & LifeMap is a team of advisors, pathway coaches, student mentors, and administrators who support and guide students to reach their academic, career, transfer, and personal goals. As part of this mission, we are seeking a Retention Outreach Specialist to guide and support students through equitable practices that meet students' individual needs. Reporting to the Assistant Director of Retention/Student Success, the Retention Outreach Specialist will support students who receive an early alert with the development of meaningful academic and personal goals that are connected to an education plan. The primary focus of this role is to utilize holistic advising to guide students in the development and implementation of individualized success plans.

  • Conduct outreach to students that receive an alert via the early alert tool and refer students to appropriate college resources, personnel and support.
  • Provide advising support around academic policies such as non-attendance grades, midterm warning grades and course/college withdrawal.
  • Build relationships with students and staff to support the student's movement along their educational pathway through direct referrals, progress checks, and proactive outreach.
  • Assist students in clarifying education, career and transfer goals and help students to develop individualized success plans.
  • Collaborate with Retention team leadership to develop and implement innovative retention activities.
  • Maintain a clear understanding of Pathways, programs of study requirements, and financial aid eligibility.
  • Utilize retention software to track alert outreach and progress (TargetX).
  • Participate in peak enrollment events such as Start Now and provide advising and course registration support for new and continuing students.
  • Demonstrate multicultural competence (including an awareness and understanding of historically minoritized populations) and maintain an educational and work environment that affirms commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Participate in college meetings and community engagement as needed.

Requirements:

  • Master's degree in Education, Counseling, Psychology or a closely related field; with two (2) years of experience and/or training involving college admissions, academic advisement, career development, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Proficient in student information systems and technology as well as MS Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proven ability to work with a faculty, staff and student population.
  • Demonstrate and possess a strong understanding of cultural competency and how to communicate effectively to different audiences.
  • Hybrid schedule Monday-Thursday and Friday 9am-11am remote.
  • In person attendance at division retreats (if they live in state) is required.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Experience working in a community college.
  • Bi-lingual ability: our College has a linguistically diverse student population, so while not required, for this position the ability to read, speak and write in Spanish, or another language, is preferred.

Additional Information:

Salary: $36.55 an hour for 18.5 hours a week. Part-Time Non-Benefited position.

  • Applicants who do not meet the qualifications as noted above are encouraged to put in writing precisely how their background and experience has prepared them with the equivalent combination of education, training and experience required for the responsibilities of this position.
  • Please note that as a condition of employment, the final candidate will undergo Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) and Sex Offender Registry Information (SORI) background screenings in accordance with state regulations. The results of these screenings may impact the hiring decision.
