What is a part time accounting?

A part time accounting job involves performing accounting tasks, such as bookkeeping, preparing financial reports, managing invoices, and reconciling accounts, but on a reduced schedule compared to a full-time role. These positions are ideal for individuals seeking flexibility, such as students, parents, or those supplementing other work. Part time accountants may work for businesses, accounting firms, or as independent contractors, and their responsibilities can vary depending on the employer's needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part time accounting professional?

To thrive as a Part Time Accounting professional, you need a solid understanding of basic accounting principles, proficiency in bookkeeping, and often an associate’s degree or relevant coursework in accounting. Familiarity with accounting software like QuickBooks, Excel, and possibly experience with ERP systems is highly valuable. Attention to detail, time management, and strong organizational skills help individuals excel in balancing multiple clients or tasks within limited hours. These skills and qualifications ensure accurate financial records, effective workflow, and compliance with reporting standards, which are crucial for supporting business operations.

How does a part-time accounting role typically integrate with full-time accounting staff and broader finance teams?

Part-time accountants usually work closely with full-time staff by focusing on specific tasks such as reconciliations, data entry, or assisting with month-end closings. They often coordinate with full-time accountants to ensure consistency and accuracy in financial records, and may attend regular team meetings to stay aligned on priorities. Communication is key, as part-time team members need to stay updated on ongoing projects and deadlines. While their schedules are more flexible, part-time accountants are expected to maintain high standards of organization and responsiveness to support the overall finance team’s objectives.

Can you be a part time accountant as a side job?

Part time accounting roles are often suitable as side jobs, especially for individuals with accounting skills, certifications, or experience in bookkeeping or tax preparation. Many part time accountants work flexible hours and may use accounting software like QuickBooks or Excel. However, workload and scheduling depend on the employer or client requirements, and some positions may require professional licensure or specific qualifications.

Can you work part-time as an accountant?

Key Responsibilities

  • Collections & Accounts Receivable (Primary Focus): Proactively manage overdue accounts via phone, email, and formal notices; monitor aging reports and secure timely client payments.

  • Dispute & Inquiry Management: Investigate and resolve billing discrepancies, client questions, and payment issues professionally.
  • General Accounting Support: Prepare and post standard monthly journal entries and perform routine bank and account reconciliations.
  • AP & Financial Reporting: Assist with accounts payable processing (vendor invoices, disbursements) and support the team with monthly financial reporting tasks.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.
  • Experience: 1–2 years of accounting experience, with a proven track record or strong emphasis in collections, billing, or accounts receivable.
  • Skills:
    • Knowledge of full-cycle accounting areas, including financial reporting, accounts payable, and journal entries.
    • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills for polite, firm client negotiations.
    • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel (VLOOKUPs, pivot tables) and standard accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, NetSuite, or Xero).
    • High level of accuracy, strong organizational skills, and strict attention to detail.

What We Offer

  • Schedule: Flexible part-time hours (approx. 20–25 hours per week, MWF).
  • Compensation: Competitive hourly rate commensurate with experience ($20 - $23 per hour).

Culture: Collaborative and supportive team environment with opportunities to utilize your entire accounting skill set
