Job description

The adjunct faculty member in the Health Information Management program at Midland College is responsible for preparing and teaching assigned Health Information Management courses as needed. The adjunct faculty member contributes to student learning through effective teaching, timely feedback, and adherence to program, college, and accreditation standards.

Instructional Responsibilities

  • Teach assigned HIM courses in accordance with approved curriculum and syllabi
  • Deliver instruction in online, hybrid, or face-to-face formats as assigned
  • Deliver course content aligned with CAHIIM accreditation standards and program outcomes
  • Communicate clear learning objectives and expectations to students
  • Develop and administer assessments that measure student learning outcomes
  • Provide timely grading and constructive feedback
  • Post grades in LMS in a timely manner
  • Submit final grades by the established deadline
  • Maintain a positive and effective learning environment
  • Identify at-risk students and implement early interventions to promote success
  • Develop and administer assessments that measure student learning outcomes
  • Teach select dual credit courses, as assigned

Curriculum and Program Alignment

  • Utilize approved course materials and participate in course updates as requested
  • Maintain accurate student records, including attendance and grades, in compliance with college policies and accreditation requirements
  • Participate in the development and implementation of curriculum and evaluation of courses to ensure alignment with accreditation and industry standards

Professional Responsibilities

  • Maintain current knowledge in Health Information Management practices
  • Adhere to Midland College policies, procedures, and faculty handbook expectations
  • Participate in required departmental, divisional, and institutional meetings 
  • Communicate regularly with students and College officials, including responding to emails, calls, and requests for meetings
  • Maintain AHIMA membership

Other Duties

  • Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of adjunct faculty responsibilities

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management or Health Informatics
  • Current Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) certification, maintained throughout employment
  • Minimum of three years of professional experience in the Health Information Management field.
  • Proficiency with basic computer applications 
  • Effective written and oral communication skills
  • Valid Texas Driver’s license, good driving record, and insurability on Midland College’s insurance policy

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Health Information Management or Health Informatics
  • Certification in medical coding through AHIMA as a CCS or CCS-P
  • Teaching experience in higher education or workforce training
  • Proficiency with Learning Management Systems (e.g., Canvas)

Physical Demands

  • Courses assigned on a part-time, semester basis
  • Evening, weekend, and/or online instruction may be required
