What is Part 91 flying?

Part 91 flying refers to operations conducted under Part 91 of the Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs), which govern general aviation in the United States. This includes private, non-commercial flying such as personal, business, and some corporate flights where the aircraft is not carrying people or property for compensation or hire. Pilots and operators under Part 91 have more flexibility and fewer regulatory requirements compared to commercial operators under Parts 121 or 135. However, they are still required to follow strict safety and maintenance rules set by the FAA.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Part 91 pilot?

To thrive as a Part 91 Pilot, you need a valid pilot’s license (typically a commercial or ATP certificate), strong aeronautical knowledge, and extensive flight experience. Familiarity with aircraft systems, avionics, and navigation tools such as GPS and flight management systems is essential, along with recurrent training and medical certification. Excellent decision-making, situational awareness, and strong communication skills are critical for ensuring safety and coordinating with passengers or crew. These skills and qualifications are vital for safe, efficient, and compliant operation of aircraft in a variety of private and corporate flying environments.

What are some common challenges pilots face when flying under Part 91 operations?

Pilots operating under Part 91 often encounter challenges such as managing more flexible scheduling, handling a broad variety of aircraft, and adapting quickly to changes in trip requirements. Part 91 pilots may also be responsible for their own flight planning, compliance with regulations, and sometimes even basic aircraft maintenance tasks. Unlike commercial operations, the level of support staff may be limited, so strong organizational and communication skills are essential to coordinate effectively with aircraft owners, dispatchers, and maintenance personnel.

What is the difference between Part 91 Flying vs Part 135 Charter Pilot?

AspectPart 91 FlyingPart 135 Charter Pilot
CertificationsPrivate Pilot License (PPL) or Commercial Pilot License (CPL)Commercial Pilot License (CPL) with additional certifications
Work EnvironmentPersonal or business flights, often private or corporateCommercial operations, passenger or cargo charter flights
UsageNon-commercial, personal use, or company flightsPaid passenger or cargo services

Part 91 Flying involves private or corporate flights with minimal regulatory requirements, focusing on non-commercial operations. In contrast, Part 135 Charter Pilots operate commercial flights, providing paid services under stricter regulations. Both roles require similar pilot certifications, but their work environments and legal obligations differ significantly.

How to become a Part 91 pilot?

To become a Part 91 pilot, you must obtain at least a private pilot certificate by completing FAA-approved flight training, passing written and practical exams, and accumulating the required flight hours. Additional certifications or ratings, such as an instrument or commercial pilot license, may be necessary depending on the type of flying and aircraft involved.

At Equinoxx Aviation, we’re a repair station founded by operators who understand that when an aircraft is down, every minute counts. We specialize in jet and turboprop maintenance, avionics sales and integration, and rapid AOG response across the Southeast and beyond. Our AOG team is the front line that keeps customers flying safely and on schedule.

We’re expanding our mobile AOG capability and looking for a skilled, self-reliant A&P Technician who thrives in the field. If you’re the kind of mechanic who can troubleshoot a Learjet at 2 a.m. on a remote ramp, document the work correctly the first time, and still treat the customer like family, we want to talk to you.

Why Join Equinoxx Aviation?

  • Competitive base pay plus overtime, night differential, travel per-diem, and performance bonuses tied directly to AOG response times and customer satisfaction.
  • Full benefits package health, dental, vision, 401(k) with company match, paid time off.
  • Career growth – we promote from within and offer factory training and IA support for the right people.
  • Real ownership culture – as a founder-led shop, your input on processes, tooling, and efficiency improvements is welcomed and rewarded.
  • The satisfaction of knowing you’re part of a tight-knit team that actually keeps aircraft flying when others can’t.

What You’ll Do (Core Responsibilities)

  • Provide immediate 24/7 AOG response – travel on short notice (drive, commercial, or charter) to customer aircraft locations across the U.S.
  • Perform on-site troubleshooting, diagnostics, repairs, inspections, and functional tests on jet and turboprop aircraft (Citation, Challenger, Pilatus, King Air, etc.).
  • Coordinate parts sourcing and logistics
  • Work independently with minimal supervision while staying in communication
  • Represent Equinoxx Aviation professionally – you are the company when you roll up to an AOG call.
  • Prioritize safety over all else

Schedule: Rotating week on week off. Thursday to Wednesday. Guaranteed 40 hours. Significant overtime and travel per-diem opportunities.

What We’re Looking For (Minimum Qualifications)

  • Current FAA Airframe & Powerplant (A&P) Certificate – required.
  • 4+ years of hands-on maintenance experience on turboprop or light/medium jet aircraft (Part 145 or Part 91/135 is a plus).
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot complex systems quickly and safely in the field.
  • Own comprehensive set of hand tools (company supplies specialty tools and ground support equipment).
  • Valid driver’s license, clean driving record, and passport (or ability to obtain one) for occasional international travel.
  • Strong working knowledge of FAA regulations, aircraft maintenance manuals, and service bulletins.
  • Excellent communication skills – you’ll be updating pilots, directors of maintenance, and owners directly.
  • Physical ability to work in all weather conditions, climb ladders, and lift 50+ lbs regularly.
  • Must be able to pass pre-employment drug screening and background check.

Preferred but not required:

  • Factory or type-specific training on Garmin avionics, Pratt & Whitney, or common business-jet platforms.
  • Previous Part 145 repair station or mobile AOG experience.
  • Sheet-metal fabrication or composite repair skills.
  • Handle avionics diagnostics and basic Garmin installations/repairs – our avionics shop support is just a phone call away.

We run a clean, professional operation that values safety, speed, and integrity above everything else.
