A Part 135 Pilot flies aircraft for charter, air taxi, or cargo operations under FAA Part 135 regulations. These pilots operate on-demand flights, adhering to stricter operational and safety standards than private flights under Part 91. Duties include flight planning, ensuring regulatory compliance, and maintaining high safety standards. They may fly passengers or cargo, often working varied schedules depending on the charter company's needs.
To thrive as a Part 135 Pilot, you need advanced piloting skills, a valid commercial pilot certificate with appropriate ratings, and substantial flight hours in relevant aircraft. Familiarity with aircraft-specific avionics, flight management systems, and regulatory requirements—including FAR Part 135—is essential. Excellent situational awareness, clear communication, and sound decision-making under pressure are crucial soft skills. These competencies are vital for ensuring passenger safety, regulatory compliance, and effective operation in diverse flying environments.
Part 135 Pilots often work variable schedules that can include nights, weekends, and on-call periods, since flights are frequently chartered or require flexibility to meet client demands. The work environment ranges from busy regional airports to smaller private airstrips, and pilots may operate in a variety of weather and operational conditions. Pilots typically work closely with dispatchers, mechanics, and customers to ensure safe and timely flights, and may sometimes be responsible for light administrative or customer service tasks. Strong teamwork and adaptability are valued in these dynamic and sometimes changing settings.
