Job description

LIFEGUARD II (SEASONAL) - BAY AREA DISTRICT / S.F. BAY SECTOR
"Priority consideration will be given to any person receiving State public assistance under the CalWORKs program. Applicants who receive State public assistance need to identify their status as a CalWORKs recipient in the comments area on the application. Applicants must submit a verification of their CalWORKs eligibility status, which may include the most recent Notice of Action showing TANF eligibility or a copy of your last aid check stub. If verification is not submitted with the application, the application will not be processed. (Applicants may obtain verification from the CalWORKs program)."
This position works under the supervision of the State Park Peace Officer Supervisor I (Ranger or Lifeguard). The reporting location is Angel Island State Park.
Primary responsibilities include performing first aid and CPR as needed, detecting and rescuing persons or vessels in distress, educating visitors about rules and regulations, providing daily leadership for the Lifeguard I (Seasonal) staff, assisting with the planning and implementation of the Junior Lifeguard Program, acting as a shift lead for Dock Operations at Ayala Cove and working as a deckhand on State Park vessels, with an emphasis on assisting peace officers with a wide variety of medical emergencies.
Angel Island State Park is a fantastic place to gain valuable experience in park operations, Junior Lifeguard Program implementation, boat operation, and medical aids. As a shift lead for dock operations, the incumbent will have the opportunity to greet visitors from around the world and welcome them to explore areas of cultural and natural significance on the island. Limited dormitory-style housing in historic buildings may be available. This position works as a crew member on State Park vessels as a deckhand. Pre-employment and random drug testing is a U.S. Coast Guard requirement. Time worked as a deckhand can count toward boat operator licensure. This is an excellent opportunity to gain experience toward a career as a licensed boat operator and to build a base of knowledge for becoming a rescue boat operator at another unit in the future. Training opportunities to improve knowledge, skills and abilities may be offered.
This is a uniformed position and the employee must abide by all applicable departmental uniform and grooming standards. Hiring process requires fingerprinting, substance abuse screening and a background check. Must be willing to work weekends and holidays. This position may be up to full-time from May through September and part-time other times of the year. This position may work up to 1500 hours within 12 consecutive months. This position is designated as not telework eligible.
The selected candidate is required to submit to a background investigation process utilizing Live Scan fingerprinting prior to appointment.
This position requires a valid Class C driver's license. You must answer the questions addressing your driver's license on your application. Ensure you provide your driver's license number, class, expiration date, and any endorsements and/or restrictions on your application.
State housing may be required. Special Requirement/Condition of Employment: Depending on the assigned location, the incumbent may be required to occupy state-owned housing to meet operational needs or may be offered state-owned housing if available. Working Conditions
Transportation by ferry and the State Park boats at regularly scheduled times is free. Island life is tranquil, with beautiful scenery and wildlife. For employees who live on the mainland - the ferry commute is a great way to start and end the day.
The Lifeguard II (Seasonal) works outdoors and performs vehicle patrol and assists boat operators on trips across the San Francisco Bay. Typically works during daylight based on the ferry schedule, which dictates visitation to the island. Willingness to work as a Deckhand on State Park vessels, may work in a variety of weather conditions, including inclement weather and may be required to assist aboard a vessel on rough seas. Must be prepared to enter cold water and swim or paddle long distances in the San Francisco Bay. Willingness to work long and irregular hours, weekends, and holidays; tact and diplomacy; dependability; maturity sufficient to assume the responsibility of protecting lives of others; willingness to conform to prescribed uniform standards. Physical strength, endurance, and agility necessary to perform lifesaving activities; visual acuity and hearing in each ear sufficient to perform the essential functions of the job.
