How much do parametric designer jobs pay per year?

As of Jul 20, 2026, the average yearly pay for parametric designer in the United States is $83,148.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $58,000.00 and $109,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Parametric Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Parametric Designer, you need a strong background in architecture, engineering, or design, with proficiency in computational design principles and parametric modeling. Expertise in software such as Rhino, Grasshopper, and scripting languages like Python or C# is typically required. Creativity, problem-solving ability, and strong communication skills help you develop innovative solutions and collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams. These skills enable the creation of optimized, adaptable designs that meet complex project requirements and drive innovation in the built environment.

How do Parametric Designers typically collaborate with architects and engineers during the design process?

Parametric Designers work closely with architects and engineers by using computational design tools to develop adaptable models that respond to changing project requirements. They often participate in design charrettes and coordination meetings, translating conceptual ideas into data-driven models that optimize performance and aesthetics. Effective collaboration involves clear communication, sharing digital models, and iteratively refining designs based on feedback from multidisciplinary teams. This collaborative approach ensures that the final design not only meets creative visions but also adheres to technical and regulatory standards.

What is the difference between Parametric Designer vs CAD Designer?

AspectParametric DesignerCAD Designer
CredentialsOften requires knowledge of parametric modeling software (e.g., Rhino, Grasshopper)Typically holds a degree in CAD, drafting, or related fields
Work EnvironmentDesign studios, architecture firms, product design companiesEngineering firms, manufacturing, architecture, and construction
Industry UsageUsed for complex, adaptable designs with parametric featuresUsed for detailed technical drawings and standard design tasks

Parametric Designers focus on creating adaptable, algorithm-driven models using parametric software, while CAD Designers produce precise technical drawings and models primarily with CAD tools. Both roles are essential in design and engineering fields but differ in their approach and software expertise.

What is the future of parametric design?

The future of parametric design for parametric designers involves increased integration with automation, generative algorithms, and advanced software tools like Grasshopper and Dynamo. As computational design becomes more prevalent, these professionals will need strong skills in coding, 3D modeling, and data analysis to create innovative, efficient, and sustainable solutions across architecture, product design, and engineering fields.

What is a parametric designer?

A parametric designer is a professional who uses parametric modeling techniques to create adaptable and complex designs, often utilizing software like Rhino, Grasshopper, or Dynamo. They focus on designing with algorithms and parameters that allow for easy modifications and variations in architectural, product, or graphic design projects.

What jobs in the US pay 300,000 a year?

Parametric designers typically do not reach a $300,000 annual salary; such high earnings are more common in executive roles, specialized consulting, or senior positions in architecture, engineering, or technology fields. High-paying roles often require extensive experience, advanced skills in design software, and a strong portfolio. Salaries at this level are usually associated with leadership, entrepreneurship, or highly specialized technical expertise.

What is the highest paying career in design?

In design fields, roles such as creative directors, UX/UI directors, and senior industrial designers tend to have the highest salaries, often exceeding six figures with experience and advanced skills. Specialized roles that require expertise in areas like parametric design, 3D modeling, and software such as Rhino or Grasshopper typically offer higher compensation. Leadership positions and those in high-demand industries generally provide the highest pay in design careers.

Job description

The Senior 3D Parametric Designer is responsible for transforming complex, free-form architectural envelope concepts into highly precise, three-dimensional construction models and fabrication data. Utilizing computational script modelling, this role bridges the gap between raw design intent and real-world mobile manufacturing for iconic, landmark metal roofing and wall faรงade systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Computational Modelling: Develop and modify highly detailed, 3D building envelope assemblies based on complex architectural and structural digital files.
  • Parametric Scripting: Write and execute Grasshopper-based scripts to rationalize complex surface geometries, design panelization schemes, and model specialized roof/faรงade components.
  • Fabrication Ready Hand-off: Convert 3D design geometry into flat, machine-ready fabrication components (such as CNC-ready files) and produce bill of materials (BOM) to reduce material waste.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner directly with external architects and engineers, as well as internal sales, estimating, and field installation teams to resolve design interferences and run clash detections.
  • Material Take-Offs: Perform precise material quantity calculations to release components to the manufacturing facility for on-site production.

Required Qualifications

  • Education: Masterโ€™s Degree in Architecture or a closely related discipline.
  • Industry Experience: One (1) year of experience in the building envelope and cladding industry.
  • Specialized Expertise: Direct experience in the design, management, and execution of projects involving computational design and development.
  • Technical Design Capabilities: Proven experience preparing specialized design proposal drawings and developing custom scripting tools.
  • Software Proficiency: Hands-on experience with industry-standard CAD and parametric software applications, including Rhinoceros, Grasshopper, Revit, and AutoCAD.
