Job description

JOB SUMMARY
Assessment/Testing will be held Oct 1 or 2.
Paramedics respond to medical emergencies on Whidbey Island as dispatched by the Island County 9-1-1 center. They provide exam, triage, treatment, and transport of patients in the pre-hospital setting within the scope of practice of a Paramedic as determined by Washington DOH. Furthermore, they operate under Washington DOH approved Island County Protocols under the direction of the Washington DOH appointed Medical Program Director of Island County. WhidbeyHealth EMS adheres to authorized EMS certified provider (EMR, EMT, AEMT, Paramedic) scope of practice provisions in law including Medical Direction (18.71.205 RCW, 246.976.920 WAC), environment of practice (246-976-182 WAC) and training (18.73.081 RCW).
WhidbeyHealth EMS employees are stationed at remote stations where they conduct daily vehicle inspection, inventory, and routine maintenance. They will also restock supplies as needed, clean and wash vehicles, as needed, daily. Additionally, they maintain quarters in a manner consistent with WhidbeyHealth EMS standards.
Other job functions may consist of EMS training, maintaining certifications, event stand-by, public education, mutual aid, and inter-facility transfers. Other duties related to the operation of the Island County EMS system may be assigned.
PRINCIPLE FUNCTIONS includes the following, other duties may be assigned:
  • All tasks allowed by state law of EMT-Paramedic, including taking vital signs, treating, and observing patients, starting, and maintaining IVs, giving emergency medications according to protocol, intubation and management of an airway, charting treatment and changes in patient condition, and transporting patients requiring such services.
  • Communicating effectively with other health care professionals involved in patient care.
  • Restocking of medications and supplies.
  • Promoting ethical confidentiality standards within the department.
  • Ensuring quality patient care.
  • Work closely with other medical personnel in other agencies and departments.
  • Secondary Functions:
    • Departmental tasks directed by EMS Director.
    • May make public appearances and attend speaking engagements on EMS issues.
    • Performs other related duties as assigned by the EMS Director.
  • Analyze emergency situations quickly and correctly; take effective course of action.
  • Act independently and make judgments regarding safety.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other hospital staff and the public.
  • Communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Demonstrate proficiency as a competent EMT-Paramedic.
JOB KNOWLEDGE & QUALIFICATIONS
Education
  • Highest level of education completed, minimum high school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Paramedic Certification Program.
Training and Experience
  • Must be a minimum of 21 years of age.
  • Must be insurable by Hospital Insurance carrier, as an emergency vehicle operator.
  • Minimum of two years' field experience in EMS.
  • Oversees EMT partner and other EMTs on scene in a non-managerial position.
  • Supervised by the EMS Director.
  • Interrelationships with EMTs, paramedics, other hospital staff and allied agencies.
  • Must follow principles and practices of the WhidbeyHealth EMS Department.
  • Must follow department policies, procedures, and protocols for EMS personnel.
  • Must have knowledge of incident command system and familiarity with local area fire / EMS agencies.
  • Must be familiar with federal and state regulations and standards for the delivery of emergency medical care.
  • EMS vehicles and equipment, including all communication equipment.
  • Paramedics have access to Protected Health Information (PHI) and will follow the EMS Department policy regarding access and exchange of information.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
  • Valid Washington State Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic license.
  • Valid Washington State Driver's License
  • Current personal auto insurance and is insurable with the District's insurance carrier.
  • Washington State driving record upon hire and may be subject to annual driving record checks based on facility insurance carrier requirements.
  • American Heart Association BLS HCP required within 30 days of hire.
  • American Heart Association ACLS HCP required within 30 days of hire.
  • American Heart Association PALS HCP required within 30 days of hire.
$25.769 - $39.229 Base Rate - For every twenty-four (24) hour shift, employees are compensated at their base rate for eight (8) hours, then sixteen (16) hours of overtime.
$34.359 - $52.305 Effective Rate - Unscheduled time, non-shift hours, picked up/partial shifts (meetings, stand-by, public education etc.)
