Job description

VCU Medical Center's Adult Emergency Department provides comprehensive, specialized emergency care 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for critically ill and severely injured patients. VCU Medical Center is also one of only two adult Level I trauma centers in Virginia verified by the American College of Surgeons.
The Adult Emergency Department delivers care across the full continuum of treatment - from emergency stabilization and critical care to rehabilitation, home health, and follow-up services. More than 80,000 patients are treated annually, with state-of-the-art care available for cardiac, trauma, pediatric, obstetric, and gynecologic emergencies. The hospital also serves as a statewide referral center and functions as a coordinating facility for the Richmond metropolitan area during disasters and large-scale emergencies.
The Emergency Department (ED) Paramedic functions as an integral member of the interdisciplinary emergency medicine team at VCU Health, providing advanced in-hospital emergency care under the supervision of a licensed physician, medical director and manager. The ED Paramedic also supports trauma and critical care resuscitations, assists with airway management preparation, and helps ensure rapid room turnover and patient throughput. Additional duties include assisting patients with activities of daily living, providing comfort and nutritional support, maintaining a clean and safe clinical environment, stocking and managing medical supplies and equipment, and accurately collecting and documenting patient care data in accordance with department standards.
The ideal candidate demonstrates strong clinical judgment, attention to detail, adaptability under pressure, and a commitment to delivering compassionate, patient-centered emergency care as part of a collaborative healthcare team.

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire:
Current EMT-P/Paramedic certification/licensure in Virginia
AHA ACLS Certification
Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for continued employment:
Current EMT-P/Paramedic certification/licensure in Virginia
AHA ACLS Certification
AHA PALS Certification or equivalent within 90 days of hiring
NAEMT PHTLS, ACS ATLS orequivalent preferred
Experience REQUIRED:
Demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide appropriate care within the scope of practice of an AEMT, EMT-Intermediate, Paramedic - or MMAC Qualified Combat Medic/68W, Corpsman or Medical Technician/4NOX.
Experience PREFERRED
1 year of active pre-hospital service
Previous hazardous materials experience
Education/training REQUIRED:
Successful completion of an accredited EMT-P/Paramedic course.

Independent action(s) required:
May function independently under protocols approved by VCUHS Medical Director and hospital and departmental policy/procedure. Functions under direction of a licensed independent practitioner in providing patient care, emotional support, and problem solving; all in accordance with hospital and unit policy/procedure. Functions under departmental Standards of Practice (SOP) in the communications room and in the role of patient transport in collaboration with RN and Physician colleagues. Job duties may include the handling, transportation, access to and/or contact with medications and related supplies.
