Manager, Lighting

The Games Planning & Delivery group aims to deliver the most seamless, innovative, and engaging Games experience ever for all athletes, fans, partners, and the community.ย  The Games Planning & Delivery team is currently organized in four key areas including Venue Infrastructure, Venue Management, Revenue & Commercial, and Games Operations, but will expand to over 30 functional areas by Games time.ย ย ย ย 

The Venue Infrastructure team is responsible for delivering the competition and non-competition venues fit-for-purpose for the preparation and staging of the Olympic and Paralympic Games. This department is responsible for managing the design, development, program management, construction, maintenance, and removal of all Games infrastructure in existing and fully temporary venues.

Lighting, in the Games environment, refers to the coordination and design of the overlay and temporary lighting systems necessary for Broadcast, Sport, and Operations Games functional areas in compliance with International Olympic and Paralympic Committees, Olympic Broadcasting Services (OBS), and International Sport Federation requirements.

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Lighting, the Manager, Lighting will be responsible for overseeing the development of lighting plans, informing procurement, and managing installation, maintenance, and removal during operations for a venue or group of venues.ย 

Significant integration with stakeholders is required to determine the extents and locations of lighting required. The duties of this role include collaborating with external engineering resources and an internal engineering team. This role requires advanced knowledge of the development of technical plans and designs. To support venue development efforts, this role is required to coordinate with multiple internal functional areas to ensure feedback is captured and designs meet industry codes and standards, IOC requirements, and cost and schedule targets. LA28 will make extensive use of existing venues as well as build temporary venues, requiring varying applications of lighting principles.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Advance lighting technical design and development ย 
  • Oversee external resources to deliver on workstream responsibilitiesย 
  • Coordinate internal and external stakeholders' requirements to develop cost effective and streamlined solutions to meet games time requirements for assigned venue(s)
  • Prepare and oversee the lighting portion of the technical venue design books and other technical publications for assigned venue(s). Advance engineering designs through increasing levels of detail for construction drawings.ย 
  • Oversee an installation team during operations and maintenance during the event period.ย 

    Cross-Functional Collaborationย 

    • Integrate and influence venue design to allow for efficient solutions.ย 
    • Support infrastructure requirements for Broadcast, Energy, Sport, and OBS, amongst other stakeholders.
    • Support the development of integrated workplans and schedules with the infrastructure master schedule, event operations planning, and central Program Management for assigned venue(s).ย 
    • Support other cross-functional initiatives, including Permitting, Risk Management, and Event Operations.ย 
Background & Requirements:
  • Bachelorsย degreeย in Lighting, Theater/Live Entertainment, or Technical Direction preferredย ย ย 
  • 5+ years of experience with lighting design and installation
  • Experience with temporary infrastructure and overlay
  • Experience on teams delivering complex, high-profile infrastructure projects
  • Advanced knowledge of industry tools and software (Revit, AutoCAD, Vectorworks, AGI32 etc.)ย 
  • Advanced knowledge of the properties of light (Intensity, Angle, Form, Color Temperature, Color Rendering, LED Flicker, etc)
  • Advanced knowledge of lighting control system functionality (DMX, dimming, relays, etc)
  • Detail-oriented with excellent command of productivity and collaboration tools (Office360, SharePoint, Smartsheet, Autodesk Cloud, etc.)
  • Experience with key industry codes and practicesย  (IES standards, NFPA lighting requirements, etc)
  • Knowledge of key lighting activities, including site preparation, installation, maintenance, and removal
  • Knowledge of fundamental project management concepts (e.g., scope, schedule, budget)ย 
  • Familiarity with temporary infrastructure projects in addition to permanent construction processesย ย 
  • Demonstrated commitment to co-creation and collaborative decision-making

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
  • Available to work onsite in our Downtown Los Angeles-based office.ย ย 
  • The majority ofย work will be conducted in an office setting, requiring extended periods of time using computers, phones, and other office equipment.ย ย ย 
  • The LA28 office is anย open floorplanย working environment; employees must be able to work efficiently in anย open cubicleย environment.ย ย ย 
  • Hours of work may vary, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, especially during peak event periods.ย 
  • Perform other duties asย required; the role will evolve over time and may include operational responsibilities during the Olympic and Paralympic Games.ย 

The annual base salary range for this position is $120,000.00 - $155,000.00. The pay scale provided is the range that LA28 reasonably expects to pay as starting base compensation for this role. All LA28 compensation remains subject to final determination based on individual candidate qualifications, experience, or other reasonable criteria consistent with LA28's operational business needs and applicable law.
