What is the difference between Paralegal Student Intern vs Paralegal?

AspectParalegal Student Intern

Paralegal Student Interns are typically law students or students pursuing paralegal certificates gaining practical experience, often in a temporary or part-time role. Paralegals are trained professionals with completed education or certification, performing more advanced legal tasks regularly. Interns usually work under supervision, while paralegals handle substantive legal work independently. Both roles are common in law firms, corporate legal departments, and government agencies, but paralegals generally have more responsibilities and job stability.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Paralegal Student Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Paralegal Student Intern, you need a foundational understanding of legal research, document drafting, and case management, typically supported by enrollment in a paralegal studies program. Familiarity with legal research databases like Westlaw or LexisNexis, as well as proficiency in Microsoft Office, is often required. Strong attention to detail, effective communication, and the ability to manage multiple tasks are essential soft skills. These competencies ensure interns can support attorneys efficiently, produce accurate work, and adapt to the fast-paced demands of a legal environment.

What types of tasks and responsibilities can a Paralegal Student Intern expect to handle during their internship?

As a Paralegal Student Intern, you can expect to be involved in a variety of tasks that support attorneys and legal staff. Typical responsibilities include conducting legal research, organizing and maintaining case files, drafting legal documents such as memos or correspondence, and assisting with trial preparation. You may also attend meetings or court proceedings to observe and take notes. These hands-on experiences help you develop practical skills and gain insight into the daily operations of a legal team, preparing you for a future career in the legal field.
