What is a paper mill worker?

Paper mill workers are employees who operate and maintain the machinery used to manufacture paper products from raw materials like wood pulp or recycled paper. Their responsibilities include monitoring production processes, ensuring quality standards, performing maintenance, and troubleshooting equipment. Paper mill workers often work in teams and may specialize in areas such as pulping, papermaking, or finishing. The role requires attention to safety protocols due to the use of heavy machinery and chemicals.

What are the qualifications to work in a paper mill?

The qualifications needed to work in a paper mill depend on your responsibilities. To be a mill operator, you need to have a high school diploma or GED certificate, as well as job training under more experienced machine operators. You also need excellent mechanical and technical problem-solving skills. Managers typically have several years of experience working in a mill, including at least a year in a supervisory position. Quality control workers need to have a strong grasp of the technical specifications of the materials and paper goods they inspect and knowledge of regulatory compliance. Service technicians need mechanical training and strong computer skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a paper mill worker, and why are they important?

Employees may face challenges such as exposure to noise, dust, and varying temperatures, as well as the need for constant attention to detail to avoid equipment malfunctions. To manage these challenges, it's important to follow safety protocols, use personal protective equipment (PPE), and participate in regular training sessions. Teamwork and clear communication with supervisors and coworkers also play a vital role in maintaining a safe and productive workspace.

We serve customers across industries like food and beverage, technology, health and beauty, pharmaceuticals, and more.

What sets us apart? Our culture is built on five core behaviors that guide everything we do:

  • Build Trust – We keep our promises and act with integrity.

  • Innovate and Be Resilient – We embrace challenges and create solutions that raise the bar.

  • Include and Collaborate – We believe diverse perspectives make us stronger.

  • Raise the Bar – We strive for excellence in every detail.

If you’re looking for a place where these values aren’t just words but actions, you’ll feel right at home here.

How you'll make an impact:

As an Estimator based at our Renton facility, you’ll help turn customer needs into accurate, competitive quotes. This role’s primary focus is supporting our West region operations in Renton, WA and Woodland, CA, while also providing backup support to the Eastern, Midwest, and Mountain regions as needed. You’ll partner closely with Sales, Project Coordination, Production, and outside vendors to evaluate materials, labor, freight, and production options, then recommend smart, cost-effective solutions that balance quality, speed, and profitability.

What you’ll do:

  • Build accurate project estimates by calculating material needs, including paper, ink, plates, liner, medium, and related inputs.

  • Determine the right production process, equipment, and labor hours based on customer specifications.

  • Evaluate manufacturing options and recommend the most practical, cost-effective approach.

  • Source pricing from outside vendors and secure strong overall value for outsourced materials or services.

  • Review freight rates and incorporate shipping costs into quotes when needed.

  • Combine material, labor, freight, and outsourcing costs into customer-ready quotes that support margin goals.

  • Partner with Production to answer questions about costs, capabilities, labor needs, and manufacturing constraints.

  • Stay current on the capabilities of our printing and converting equipment, including setup requirements and run speeds.

  • Work cross-functionally with Sales, Project Coordination, and Production to improve quality, reduce cost, and increase manufacturability.

  • Maintain vendor pricing and supplier information while keeping an eye on market trends and material availability.

  • Spot quality issues early, support corrective actions, and help prevent repeat problems.

  • Identify process improvements and cost-saving opportunities that enhance efficiency and the customer experience.

  • Take on additional responsibilities as needed to support the team and the business.

What it takes to succeed:

Basic Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience in an estimating-focused role, with a strong understanding of estimating processes and workflows within a manufacturing environment

  • Experience within the paper, packaging, or corrugated industry, with working knowledge of how manufacturing operations support customer solutions.

  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills, with the ability to evaluate complex inputs and translate them into accurate estimates.

  • Ability to calculate standard production costs and estimate material usage and production time requirements.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and general computer applications.

  • Technically proficient and systems-oriented, with the ability to quickly learn and navigate estimating or ERP platforms.

  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic manufacturing environment with shifting priorities.

  • Proven ability to operate as a self-starter who takes ownership, works independently, and does not require day-to-day supervision.

  • Demonstrated team-first mindset, with a willingness to jump in, collaborate cross-functionally, and contribute wherever needed.

  • Willingness to support operations with a primary focus on the West region (Renton, WA and Woodland, CA) while also providing backup support across the Eastern, Midwest, and Mountain regions as needed and collaborating with on-site teams as required.

We’re especially interested in candidates who bring industry-specific estimating experience and familiarity with Radius ERP, as these capabilities will accelerate onboarding and impact.

Preferred Requirements

  • Experience working with Radius ERP (or similar estimating/ERP platform), with a strong preference for candidates who have direct hands-on experience.

  • Prior experience as an Estimator within a packaging or corrugated environment, particularly within Radius.

  • Background in planning, scheduling, or related functions with exposure to estimating workflows and systems.

  • Experience with structural design
