Underground Media & Design

We are a full-service media, design & print shop located in the basement of the McMaster Students Centre. We offer a wide range of affordable print products as well as self-serve options to the students, staff & faculty of McMaster and the broader Hamilton community.


The Customer Service Representatives are responsible for opening and closing duties, assisting clients with printing and pricing, answering phones, checking and responding to general email, maintaining stock and organizing the front area, receiving cash, debit and credit payments, assisting with poster approvals
and light production work as assigned.


Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Customer Service:

  • Open and closing procedures for self serve area
  • Front desk reception, greeting all clients as they enter
  • Assist customers with printing and copy orders and pricing
  • Report software or printer issues to the manager, immediately
  • Answering telephone, and general email questions, forwarding
    advanced tasks to Manager or Designers when appropriate.
  • Receive payment, at front counter from Internal and External clients


Production Assistance:

  • Applying the APPROVAL stamp to posters, dated and initialed
  • Assisting Customers with minor file adjustments to achieve approval
  • Spiral Binding, Stapling, Folding and Cutting for walk-in clients
  • Re-stock printers and maintain organized shelves behind counter


Other:

  • Explaining and enforcing the MSU Postering Guidelines checklist
  • Encourage the use of UG punch cards, rather than Cash
  • POSTERING SERVICE, putting up and taking down posters from
  • 40 boards across campus using thumb-tacks, removing expired or
    non approved posters


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Skills in verbal communication required to deal with customers and others within the organization
  • Organizational skills and comfortable with basic use of computers and email an asset
  • Background in customer service oriented industry are preferred.


Effort & Responsibility

  • Must be courteous, friendly, and organized
  • Able to problem solve and deal with varying personalities
  • Responsible for dealing with cash and taking card payments
  • Ability to multi-task, Email and in-person communication


Working Conditions

  • The environment has many peaks of frenzied clients who are extremely demanding with an environment that can be noisy and hectic at times.
  • Working with computers, checking settings to prepare documents for print.
  • Periods of training or high activity levels may require customer service representatives to work more than the scheduled weekly hours
  • Moderate lifting including heavy objects such boxes of paper and final printed products


Training and Experience

  • Experience with printing documents and standard paper sizes are preferred
  • Customer service experience an asset
