What is a Pap test?

A Pap test, also known as a Pap smear, is a medical screening procedure used to detect abnormal cells in the cervix, which can help identify precancerous conditions and cervical cancer. During the test, a healthcare provider collects cells from the cervix and examines them under a microscope. The Pap test is an important part of routine gynecological care, especially for women aged 21 to 65. Regular screening can help find changes in cervical cells early, when they are most treatable. The test is usually quick, causes minimal discomfort, and can be performed during a regular pelvic exam.
